certainly should have taught us to be wary...But, Bush Jr was among our youngest when he came into the WH, but clearly had severe mental deficiencies even then...So the age correlation is less than perfect. Some elder statesman/women not only maintain their high level of mental acuity well into their 80s, but probably do so largely as a result of being flexible in their thinking and ability to process change... OF COURSE I know I'll be old too someday. And I fully expect that some portion of the people will think I'm just a crazy old coot, too! My comment stands...why are 100 year old men running the show? I don't care about Jimmy Carter or Art Linkletter or Rip Van Winkle. What I am talking about are FRESH IDEAS. I heard a story on NPR a few years ago about research into aging and the creative process, wherein a study indicated that the brain simply stops trying to innovate and be creative after a certain point, and we fall back on what we already know. The used Eric Clapton as an example. Listen to his music then and now (if you can handle the "now"). What used to be exciting and different and innovative is now reduced to album after album of the same damned stuff. He doesn't take risks anymore, he doesn't try anything new. The creative process is no longer a yearning to seek out new ways to assemble notes and sounds, it is about safety as one faces ones inevitable mortality. When was last time you heard an innovative new rock band comprised of 75 year olds?

That's all I'm saying. I am not being "ageist." I am saying that running the government certainly takes a certain level of life experience, but sometime innovation and creativity are called for to solve vexing problems, and that means finding some fresh thinking and fresh ideas.

But then, who am I to say? I'm just an aging writer and artist and doesn't know jack.
