U.N. to hold hearings into Halliburton Foreign Corrupt Practices?
Edited on Fri Oct-13-06 01:19 PM by IdesOfOctober
With all the Bush Administration talk about graft, corruption, and kickbacks at the U.N., would anyone be surprised to see a U.N. inquiry into the allegations that Halliburton has routinely bribed government officials in developing countries such as Nigeria?

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=tskj+halliburton+nigeria

Halliburton/KBR reveals in KBR's latest Registration Statement that Nigeria isn't the only place where bribes may have been paid out by "rogue" Halliburton executives: http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1357615/000119312506195857/0001193125-06-195857-index.htm

"One of my concerns is that Halliburton is not only exporting public corruption under the guise of spreading democracy, but that it is also working on energy projects that harm American energy-producing jobs, such as those found in the coal producing regions of Appalachia. Voters in such areas as Southwestern Virginia, West Virginia, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, and Pennsylvania have a right to know about these matters. My dad and both grandfathers were disabled in the coal mines, and I have extended family throughout that area that still makes a living that way. Without the UMWA/Lorin E. Kerr Scholarship, I would have had a more difficult time paying for college. So when I see bribes being paid to open up cheap liquefied natural gas operations that will compete with American coal jobs, I take exception to that." -- David A. Smith, in this SEC filing: http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/45012/000126947606000004/taleoftwodavidsmiths.htm

2. When you start hearing the phrase ...
... "state-sponsored bribery," or "bribery non-proliferation," you know that the U.N. and the non-aligned nations have had their fill, and have decided to turn the tables on this administration.

6. The effect of bribes paid by the likes of Halliburton execs...
... does more damage to our standing in the world, and keeps thugocracies in power around the globe.

Bribery non-proliferation is an important global topic, which probably does merit discussion on a global scale.

14. Do you know where I can get more information
wrt this paragraph:

"As I scrolled through the responses, it became clear that the subject under discussion was certain projects Halliburton was seeking to undertake in Nigeria, including a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant. So far, the e-mails pertained to my job function, and I continued to scan them for whatever specific action item(s) I was being asked to perform. It was not uncommon for my proposal group to work with our counterparts in overseas offices, to produce key personnel curriculum vitae, past project write-ups, etc."

We are fighting a proposed LNG terminal in our community and need as much information as we can possibly get.

TIA

The good folks in Boston have been fighting the arrival of LNG tankers, and have built quite a network and repository:

Please let me know if I can offer more help.

16. We are already aware of Boston
and the proposal in Fall River. Also we know of the kidnappings of three LNG workers in Nigeria.

Because of the paragraph Dead Eye Dick shoved into the 2005 Energy Bill, (only the feds have siting authority) we've arrogantly been told it's a done deal.

LNG is Dead Eye Dick's baby, right?

There are five proposed sitings in my state, Oregon. (Four on the Colombia river and one directly across from the airport in my small environmentally pristine town.)

LNG has consumed my life for the better part of two years. Am I wrong to say it's a scam?

17. Stop LNG in Oregon: A strategic Tactician's Primer
1. Have Ron Wyden work with Byrd and Rockefeller in the Senate. If you send me the info, I can make a point of going to see Senator Wyden during his next Oregon Open House (every Tuesday when Congress is in session). I first spoke with his chief legal counsel back in April on the Halliburton stuff. Senators Byrd and Rockefeller are keen to protect - and expand - America's own energy-producing jobs, right here at home. Foreign LNG threatens these good jobs.

2. File suit in Federal Court, to insist that all required ecological impact studies are done.

3. Become intimately familiar with the Code of Federal Regulations sections that map to the laws in question: http://ecfr.gpoaccess.gov/cgi/t/text/text-idx?sid=0fdc10e9ced40a9098c2a84def94ad8b&c=ecfr&tpl=/ecfrbrowse/Title10/10tab_02.tpl

Please don't hesitate to soundboard other ideas here. I'm sure others have great ideas on how to put together a larger-than-Oregon coalition to help you out here.

18. Thank you!
All of our representatives, local, state and federal know about Jordan Cove Energy in Coos Bay/North Bend, as well as Bradwood Landing on the four Columbia River sitings. Publically, they will not give their opinions, being politicians and all. We have talked w/an aide to Gov. Kulongoski, Rep. DeFazio, our state reps, our local city councils and written to both senators and gotten no where.

The worse thing is, the proposed pipelines leading from the terminals, all go to California. Essentially, Oregon would be the gas station for California. And it's been proven that California does not need the LNG.

My apologies for going off topic.
