Dark Days for our Country by Amy Branham

Yesterday our President signed The Military Commissions Act. The signing of this Bill into law makes it possible for George W. Bush to try military prisoners without regard to the Geneva Conventions and for him to have the power to decide who is a terrorist and what interrogation techniques can be used.

In addition, it takes away the right of habeas corpus, a law that has been in place in this country for over 200 years that allows prisoners to protest their detention. They can be held indefinitely without charge or trial.

I can’t help but wonder, who will GBW next declare a terrorist? You seen, this law does not pertain just to those who are not citizens of this country, but also to those of us who are citizens.

Does this mean that the President can declare anyone who disagrees with him a terrorist? Does this mean that those of us who have been trying to end this war and who have spoken out against it will be declared “enemy combatants”, arrested and thrown into those detention camps that have been springing up across the country?

President Bush has twice taken the oath of office, an oath in which he swore to uphold and protect the Constitution of the United States of America. Instead, he has trampled on every little piece of it and gone about the process of dismantling it piece by piece. Shouldn’t this be an impeachable offense?

What is just as sad is that those men and women who were elected to office, who also swore to uphold and protect the Constitution, voted to give President Bush this power. Keep this in mind on election day when you go to the polls to vote.

It is truly a dark time in our country.
