How about we take away the war toys from the leaders of the world
and put them all in one room and let them fight it out with the fists. Wouldn't that help everybody?

2. Many years ago there was a TV Ad
Edited on Mon Oct-23-06 06:07 AM by maine_raptor
that purposed just about such a thing. It had two old, overweight white men, dressed in suits and ties, slugging it out in a field while others looked on.

The premise was, from the narration, that rather than sending young men off to war, the leaders should just duke it out.

I think that was back during the Vietnam Era, although I'm willing to bet that it would apply equally well today.

Anybody else on DU remember that ad?

11. He and Andropov, short-lived Soviet premiers.
A taxi driver pointed out to me that the two superpowers were led by the head of the CIA: Bush, and the head of the KGB: Andropov

(the men might have also been Secretaries of the Communist Party at the times.)

10. No, I know that one, this was different.
It was long ago, back during the 60's (or early 70's). I remember the picture (the setting reminded me of the old Coke "I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" commercial). They walked across the field, each with a group of 20 or so behind them, removed their coats and just started to fight.

I don't remember the voice-over, but I know the script was based on the "Old Men Send Young Men" theme.

It pre-dated what you are talking about, C_U_L8R.

5. All Quiet on the Western Front
from the Amazon movie review page: http://www.amazon.com/Quiet-Western-Front-Lewis-Milestone/dp/6300181421

from a novel by German author Erich Maria Remarque

Katczinsky: At the next war let all the Kaisers, presidents and generals and diplomats go into a big field and fight it out first among themselves. That will satisfy us and keep us at home.

8. There were some profound deliberations in the book
I recall one of the men contemplating his possible death in the war. To put it into philosophical perspective, he said that if that were to happen "the sun will still come up tomorrow morning". I think I have the line correct. A young person should read that.
