O'Really on Oprah: Calls waterboarding dunking - audience claps
O'Reilly told Oprah's audience that America's treatment of Kalik Sheik Mohammed (sp?) was more than justitifed because he killed people and we just dunked him in some water to make him spit out the names of other terrorists who are a threat to this nation. O'Really asked the audience if gaining the names of terrorists from Mohammed who would have killed them all wasn't worth "dunking" somebody in the oh-so-benign waterboarding technique :eyes:. The audience clapped in agreement. If I didn't know better, I might have clapped too. People don't know what torture is/means and its impact--especially waterboarding.

1. Oprah's audience is not known for its intellect
400 years ago, they would have applauded this kind of dunking, as well:

A Witch Ducking

Illustration from A Popular History of the United States by William Cullen Bryant. New York, Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1896. One 'foolproof' way to establish whether a suspect was a witch was ducking. With right thumb bound to left toe, the accused was plunged into a convenient pond. If he or she floated it proved an association with the black arts, with the body rejecting the baptismal water. If the victim drowned he or she was innocent. A ducking stool or diving chair was also used in America for witches.

Now if they know and clap, that's a different story.

10. Perhaps you are right. But then the German people
Edited on Sat Oct-28-06 01:50 PM by Benhurst
claimed they didn't know either.

I think it's time for Oprah to wrap it up and find something else to do.

She should follow Oliver Cromwell's admonition to the Rump Parliament:

"YOU HAVE BEEN SAT TO LONG HERE FOR ANY GOOD YOU HAVE BEEN DOING. DEPART, I SAY, AND LET US HAVE DONE WITH YOU. IN THE NAME OF GOD, GO!."

4. That had to be the worst Oprah ever.
She asked Madonna and the Dixie Chicks harder questions the other day.

She was out of her realm and it was blatantly obvious how sheltered and uniformed of a life she lives.

5. I really think O'Reilly and FOX had plants in the audience
Did you see the woman with the dragon fingernails say that most people didn't know what was going on in the world but her family knew because they watch Fox. She said her kids were the only ones who knew about the Amish tragedy. :puke:

9. It was a pretty vile experience.
And the African-American gentleman was definitely a plant.

My husband left the room towards the end. He couldn't take it any more. He was actually pleading with me to turn it off. We were both really disappointed with Oprah. We actually tape (DVR) her show every day and try to watch it if the subject is interesting. Now, I'll probably have to watch last night's Letterman in secret.

14. I DVR her every day too. I hate that I missed Letterman.
In fairness to Oprah, she lets her audience speak. She tries to remain as neutral as possible. I think that she is very bright--she reads and questions things. I could glean from the look on her face at certain points that the dissonant "reasoning" from O'Reilly was not sitting well with her. The icy closing where she nor Bill were talking very much also indicated to me that she is not a supporter of his nor did she believe him.

19. I guess. I just wanted her to ask him harder questions.
Like I observed before, she seemed to be harder on The Dixie Chicks than on BO.

I agree that she's a very intelligent woman, but I feel she missed an opportunity. It's as if this whole show was because he called her out as only having liberal guests on her show.

12. I happened by my mother's and she had it on ...
Though I am not a fan of the Oprah Winfrey show ... she did not look happy to be interacting with that scummy vermin (BO). The audience appeared to be loaded with right wing nuts ... though there was a very attractive middle aged man confronting BO.

21. WTF?
Okay, I can (kind of) understand if someone thinks they're getting the "real" news from Iraq by watching Fox, but believing that only Fox covered the Amish shootings? That's a new one.

Just shows you really can't ever underestimate the idiocy of Fox viewers.

31. was there any sort of response?
Did anyone in the audience stand up and say, "Wait a minute!"?

(Though, if I had been in the audience and heard that, my reaction would be filled with so many expletives that they'd just edit it out of the broadcast! ;-) )

It does tell us a lot about Fox idiots: 1) they are told something or something pops into their little brains, 2) they immediately believe it, despite its ludicrousness; 3) they don't make the slightest attempt to check it out (it's two fucking clicks on the remote!); 4) they go on national television and say spread their idiocy with a heavy dose of righteousness.

When will we be through with these idiots? :banghead:

33. It's a good thing neither of us were there.
I would have tried to explain to them PNAC and the Downing Street Minutes.

My sister's come a long way, but whenever I bring any issue up to her and her husband, or whenever I debunk one of their Fox News talking points, they ask me where I get all this time to read up on things. They're just "too busy" and only have time to take at face value what they hear on Fox. And I feel that is the core of the problem. Many Americans are just "too busy" to pay attention or care.

Executed a few for the CRIME of water boarding too.

It's not the 'dunk the principal' tank at the elementary school carnival. America needs a media that actually informs the voters.

Perhpaps Bill-O, Hannity and some of the other RW meme spewing talking heads should do a demonstration on camera.

7. And they don't equate the U.S.'s use of torture with its good name
& its (former) place in the world as a moral leader. I wonder how many of those who applauded had sons or daughters serving in Iraq, vulnerable to being scooped up & tortured themselves.

Shame on Oprah for hawking this idiot's appearance on the internet a week beforehand, asking for questions we'd like to ask O'Reilly. Did anyone hear any of these questions read? I couldn't stay with this sham longer than the first half-hour.

just to get you to stop. Torture is at the VERY least an ineffective way of getting info, and unAmerican to boot.

Why does Bill O'Reilly hate America.

He scares the shit out of me! I saw a little clip of him just walking outside a studio, signing things, and he has this air to him as though he thinks he's royalty. He's creepy and shound NOT be on Oprah... UNLESS Oprah had a guest or she, herself, outlined EXACTLY what waterboarding is. It ain't like being baptised... god those people in the audience are stupid.

39. Yes, America tortured Mohammed. And did we learn valuable info?
No, actually.
http://mediamatters.org/items/200512160006

But we did torture a man.

Not long ago we imprisoned men who waterboarded Americans.

But then, not long ago we imprisoned or executed men who invaded other nations.
