Imagine Mrs. Putin in those colors..

Black is always a safe color, especially for photos!

In Russia, fat women were a sign of wealth..

8. Exactly.. She would look FINE if HE was wearing jeans ..but he's
in a suit.. Mrs. Putin has on a tasteful pantsuit with heeled shoes.

Laura has a decent figure, and is not ugly.. She could look very nice, but she NEVER hits the mark..

She always looks like she wandered into a mismatch outlet with a $20 bill and a half hour to kill

44. That's very true. I wonder why Laura Bush
never plays up any of her assets. As you say, she's not ugly and although she hasn't "let herself go" physically, it always seems to me like she just doesn't care what image she presents to the world. She often looks like she's completely trying to blend into the background, or that she simply wandered into her closet 10 minutes before she needed to leave for an event and grabbed the first item of clothing available (whether it's suitable or not).

You'd think the First Lady would have a stylist to keep her from making repeated clothing gaffes, and that's a pity. The raw material is there, and Laura Bush could be a stylish woman if she had someone to give her advice.

I wonder if she's been encouraged not to overshadow her husband. He's such a petulant child that I can imagine he'd be hard to live with if Laura got too much attention, because in his mind he's always got to be the center of attention (the reason I believe he wanted to become President in the first place).

45. Looking back, she's always been "fashion-challenged"
but one would think that there would be a stylist who would take her aside and style her up..

It really would not take all that much..

her jackets are too boxy and short.. (perhaps someone told her years ago that she was a "petite"..

her slacks are ill-fitting and usually on the short side

and her choice of colors /patterns....aaaack!!!

Condi is supposed to be such a "good pal"..certainly SHE could help out,. That woman can DRESS... She's an evil statesperson/advisor, but she's got style..

62. Maybe it's a coded message to the base.
I'm only partly kidding.

Not looking elegant or "professional" is one clear way of signaling her "wifely" role. She's too old to be barefoot and pregnant, so they go with the respectably "out of it" fashion look.

better than "pair of evil grinning assholes trying to look respectable in suits" look the hubbys have. In earlier pictures I've seen of her, she seemed to have some fashion sense; but I think her dragon of a mother-in-law has been a force in her fashion faux pas. No offense to dragons intended.

24. A little something I penned...
...way back in 2003, after Laura was on "Meet the Press" with Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg (if you need any history on this, look here):

Laura, you've proved
You are truly a Bush:
Not a moment's reflection;
You just speak from the tush.

You are perfect for George
And he's your kind of guy:
Is there nothing so small
About which you won't lie?

I doubt you take drugs;
You don't look like you're drinking.
Are you taking prescriptions
To prevent you from thinking?

Your First Lady image
Just cannot be fixed:
Your stare is too vacant;
Your priorities, mixed.

You plugged a kids' book
On TV, where you read it,
Then you sent the tome back
To the store for a credit.

You're a fashion disaster;
Is your dressmaker high?
You'd do better to call
The Fab 5 from Queer Eye.

As a mother, you're flummoxed
By raising a child;
Now Snoop Dogg wants the twins
To make "Bush Girls Gone Wild."

You're out of your league
With that toward which you're striving
(Is this a bad time
To mention your driving?)

That Caroline would share
Space with you says a lot:
She's too gracious to tell you:
Jackie Kennedy, you're not.

25. You'd think by now someone would have
clued her in that she's on the world stage and should dress the part. She looks like she picked up the pants, top, and jacket from the "take another 75% off" rack at K-Mart and the boots either at Payless or a flea market. No one is asking her to buy Haute Couture, but geez, can't she even look like she shops at Macy's? No fashion sense at all.

It seems this woman doesn't like the job that was forced on her. I don't know how and if she could resign from it. I think if I were resentful of what was forced on me in life, I might be equally rebellious. On the other hand, I would absolutely refuse to be out in public. If he wanted to divorce me, then fine.

Edited on Fri Nov-17-06 01:32 AM by Jennicut
A weeks back there was a post about all the ugly suits she owns so even if she was wearing a pants suit it would still be fugly! I actually think Laura is rather pretty and does not look her age (60) at all. I also think she would be a nice person happy working in a library if not for meeting and marrying that idiot W. However, her sense of fashion is terrible. Laura, do your self a favor and call Nancy Pelosi or Hillary Clinton and please go shopping with them. That's her problem. All she has to go shopping with her is Lynn "Creepy" Cheney. I doubt she would go with Condi as there is a jealousy issue there regarding W. Anyways, Laura please watch TLC's "What Not To Wear" and get some lessons in fashion.

60. I won't "dis' her for that.
For marrying, bearing children for, staying with, and supporting the Bush family, yes.

For wearing earth colors, pants, or boots? No.

It's a sad truth that Americans place more value on appearances than substance. It's also true that there is not a universal agreement on what constitutes good taste or what is "appropriate" as far as fashion goes.

I don't give a shit about fashion. It's a good thing that I'll never hold political office or be married to someone who holds political office, because I have always hated dressing formally, and will send in regrets to functions that "require" formal dress way more often than I will force myself to appear. If the world wants to judge me on what I'm wearing, so be it. Their loss.

I do give a shit about substance, though, and she doesn't have it. The lady could be the most elegantly dressed female to ever grace a public event, and I still wouldn't like what I saw.

65. Laura has no substance. Or, if she ever did, she hid it behind a cloud of xanax.
I could have picked a better outfit from the LL Bean Catalog. But I'd suggest Laura go to an LL Bean store--so she could get clothes that actually FIT. She doesn't have a bad figure, but she's not a size 10 anymore.

I bet the LL Bean folks would gladly send someone to the White House. Anyone in the US fashion industry would give her tips on looking better. On representing our country better.

94. Representing our country better is not the same as
looking better. My point: her looks, including "fashion" have nothing to do with her representation.

America is definitely full of people who judge people on their fashion choices. I just think it's a shallow, unworthy judgement. If we feel the need to judge, it should be about something more significant, more worthy, than fashion.

70. Putin's wife shows how to dress for a first lady
Mind you, she looks like she weighs more than Laura and yet her outfit fits well and her shoes are professional looking.

Laura doesn't even match in colors PLUS Uggs went out of style like two years ago. I could respect that perhaps she doesn't like wearing heels, but a nice pair of flats would have done just as good.

This woman didn't even try

79. I still think she is commiting fashion crimes
Seriously, whats wrong with just havin a little laugh? I am a female and I don't think it is bad to comment on Laura's lack of fashion sense. She married the Chimp and that alone leaves her open to any attack on what she says, does, and yes wear. I won't even get into Hillary's days in the 90's (remember all the different hairdo's?). I think its funny.

83. She's in Russia and freezing her ass off. Her clothes might

actually not be too tight -- she may have a couple of pairs of long underwear on underneath them. We Americans are used to central heating and I doubt the rich keep the thermostat at 68 like we do.. . I've made six winter trips to Italy and it gets damn cold there, plus the buildings are underheated or unheated (all the historic churches, villas, etc., that you visit) and heat is turned off at night to conserve energy. I'm sure the cold is worse in Russia, so I think we can give her a break this time.

Assuming that's Putin's wife on the right, she is also dressed quite warmly. She and Laura are both wearing what look to be wool pantsuits with boots; Laura is wearing a turtleneck under her jacket while Mrs. P. seems to be wearing a mock turtleneck. Perhaps she and Laura went for a walk or shopping expedition while their husbands were inside talking and got roped into a photo op on their return. They also look a lot bigger than the men because they're in the foreground of the photo. Look at the picture and recall that photos of George and Laura standing together have demonstrated that she is a good bit shorter than he. This photo looks like "Honey, they shrunk the presidents" because of the placement of the women several feet ahead of their husbands.

92. Okay, I just have to weigh in here...
...I agree that she is dressed inappropriately for this occasion, as for most others. And I also agree that she is a good looking woman (okay, apart from the frequent Xanax-induced vacuous stare), and it would be easy for any moderately competent style consultant to make her look terrific.

So why don't they?

Well, my theory is that it is all part and parcel of the Bush's pretensions to being royalty. Remember, the most beloved royal figure in England for the last century was the Queen Mum, a notorious frump. Maybe they're trying to emulate that?

Just a thought.

Is there anything more ridiculous and useless in society than fashion? I don't care what she says or what she wears, she isn't the President. The first lady is irrelevant.
