College Republicans at BU looking stupid - what else is new?

BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) -- A Boston University student group is offering a scholarship for white students to protest financial aid programs in the United States that select by ethnic background, university officials said on Tuesday.

The group, Boston University College Republicans, told campus publications the $250 Caucasian Achievement and Recognition Scholarship was intended as a statement and they had raised funds privately for the award, which does not have the backing of the university.

"We think giving out a scholarship based on any race is crazy," Joe Mroszczyk, president of the group, told the college's BU Today Web site.

Boston University Dean of Students Kenneth Elmore said he believed the move was misguided.

It would go to any Public High School Valedictorian who offers up a Satanic Prayer during their public commencement address.

It's meant to be a protest against organized prayer in Public School, and doesn't necessarily need to be given to someone who actually is a Satanist.

So what if they collect their own private money and select a white beneficiary? It just seems so odd, because the majority of scholarships go to white students anyways, so why do they think this is going to shock us?

If the school itself were caught giving scholarships based on skin color or religion or any other protected class, they would be in trouble for discrimination. However, outside groups are free to offer whatever scholarships they want to students based on these criteria. There are scholarships specifically for certain religious groups, ethnic groups, etc.

However, a "White" scholarship is just stupid. It depends on how one defines "White." In the past, people probably didn't consider Irish or Italians as equal to white Anglo-Saxon Protestants, and I'm pretty sure some people don't consider people from Spain to be "White" either even if they appeared to be.
