Rush has hope
I was out and about today and driving a rental car so I didn't have my satellite and AAR. I decided to check out am radio and Rush was on.

He was railing on about wanting to meet with Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi and he was upset that they hadn't returned his calls. He said well they ate lunch with Bush, why won't they meet with me. Like Rush is just as important as Bush. Yeah sure Rush. He also kept calling Harry Reid by some strange nickname. I can't remember what it was but it was definitely a put down. So Rush thinks he can make fun of the senator and then expect him to eagerly return his call and accept his invitation to meet? I was screaming "delusional" at my radio.

Then Rush got into this bit about stem cell research. He explained how he lost his hearing in his right ear and he thinks embryonic stem cell research will restore his hearing. He said he knows that will cause a baby to die but he has hope that he can hear again. He went on and on about having hope, that the liberals justify killing babies for embryonic stem cell research because they have hope.

By this time, my son who was in the car with me was yelling at the radio that oxycontin causes hearing loss.

Then we got to hear Rush's explanation of the difference between adult and embryonic stem cell research. I won't go in to details, but Rush was completely wrong. He thinks all kinds of cures have been discovered with adult stem cell research and NOTHING has been found that makes embryonic stem cell research worth killing a baby.

Then Rush started taking calls and every single caller went on and on about killing babies for embryonic stem cell research. And Rush would say well that's okay because he has hope, just like the Democrats.

I think this is going to be the next battle for us. Last night on a local KC TV show on PBS, they were talking about the state legislature in MO and the plans to overturn the amendment authorizing embryonic stem cell research in MO. Since it only passed by 2%, the conservatives seem to think they can drum up enough support to pass legislation making it illegal. They did this with concealed carry. The people in MO voted against it and the legislature passed a law making it legal. So there is a precedent.

So we all need to study up on stem cell research and get our talking points ready. Rush has hope and we need to dash it ASAP.

1. He's a lying sack of shit
I heard that schtick. He was claiming that fetuses would be "ripped out of wombs" to harvest embryonic stem cells for research.

2. people on the right are convinced that stem cells come from aborted babies and if you tell them
about IVF, it's like they never heard of it before.

5. I was just telling a student about Frist being unwilling to confirm or deny that tears spread AIDS
George Stephanopolus asked him about it because it's in some abstinence only sex ed textbook. As a doctor, he couldn't confirm it, but if he denied it, he'd be making his base look like idiots.

6. This kind of non sense always kills me
I can't figure out how one can simultaniously believe that a) AIDS is God's punishment to gays and b) one can catch AIDS from the likes of toilet seats, tears, and saliva. You can't have it both ways. Either God is punishing gays or the disease is easy to catch from non gay activities, it can't be both.

9. Neither do I
I think it is educational and important to keep up with his latest bullshit. But I can check his website. Listening to him is a lot more painful than checking his website.

7. Well....
I have MS and am very interested in stem cell research and he is partly correct. There are some major breakthroughs that I follow closely but I know of none with ESC.
I have no qualms about it; I just don't think it's where the answers are.
There was a big announcement today about back pain and stem cell - it sounds great but it is using the patients own cells.

11. There is a reason no major cures have been discovered in the US
Embryonic stem cell research lacks funding.

But Rush was just completely off the mark. He made several false claims about adult stem cell research.
