Spitzer's Iinauguration Speech - we need more of this.
Edited on Mon Jan-01-07 02:32 PM by hedgehog
I can't find a transcript, but after welcoming Pataki and other Republican leaders by name, Spitzer went on to list all the damaging things they've done to NYS in the last ten years and outlined how he is going to correct the situation. Here's hoping he's able to follow through!

On edit: apparently this was the first time ever that the governor of New York had an outdoor inauguration. Global climate change, anyone?

5. That's it - it should be on everyone's recommended reading list!
"Over the last decade, we have seen what can happen when our government stands still in the face of great challenge and inevitable change.

We’ve seen it in the burdensome property taxes and the health care we can’t afford; in the jobs that have disappeared from our upstate cities and the schools that keep failing our children; in a government that works for those who hold office — not those who put them there.

Like Rip Van Winkle, the legendary character created by the New York author Washington Irving, New York has slept through much of the past decade while the rest of the world has passed us by.

Today is the day when all of that changes — when we stop standing still and start moving forward once more. "

Oh, Snap!!

3. In NYS, I am trying to get the cities to petition the Gov for
new drug laws.

To me, Spitz is kinda like the new Pataki. Spitz supported Lieberman for Pres, but didn't say so - he instead said Howard Dean was "unelectable" because he doesn't support the Iraq war.

So, lets see Spitz improve workers rights (since, in NYS, workers are not allowed to unionize - just like the rest of America - the National Labor Review Board has robed us of the right to collective bargain).

Lets see how he gets rid of mandatory minimums and racist factors of the drug war.

Lets see how he protects our vote.

I see him as the epitome of the DLC. I hope he proves me wrong.

He has all the power. I am interested in seeing if he represents the people or the corporations. He can't do both.

8. Convince him of the corruption and injustice of these wrongs
and he will pursue the wrongs.

9. I wish that this was true, I really do
Will he pursue the wrongs, even if it is unpopular to do so?

Ask any financial investors this - "Did Spitz clean up Wall Street?" Those in the know think that he did the bidding to the CEO's, and that all this action really resulted in was a slap on the wrist. Again, a slap on the wrist is much better then the slap on the back that CORPS got from the GOP.

God Bless Spitz... Please make good!

6. Spitzer comes out swinging! I'd expect nothing less.
As a Californian, I covet the new governor. We need more of him.

7. A future president.
Give him a run as NY governor. He'll earn the respect, trust and recognition of the American people. He has the intelligence, strength, integrity and political savvy of a James Madison. We need him to lead our country. He has never feared to fight corruption and injustice from Gotti to Enron.

10. Here's a little video of the speech
We were there, it was great. I have some hope that things can and will get better.

Everyone was talking about the part of the speech where he went on with the list of the damage that the Republicans have done!

I have some pics but haven't downloaded them yet so I don't even know how they came out. I will post them later if they are any good.

Happy New Year and thanks to all of you — intrepid New Yorkers and friends — for joining us on this glorious, gray January day.

I want to thank Governor Pataki for joining in this time-honored tradition as the reins of state government pass from his careful stewardship. Thank you Governor and Mrs. Pataki for 12 years of service.
