Journalists may testify in CIA leak case

WASHINGTON - Some journalists who made careers out of questioning government officials and bearing witness to history may soon find themselves answering questions from prosecutors as key witnesses in the CIA leak case.

Ten or more reporters from some of the most prominent news organizations could be called to testify in the perjury and obstruction case of former White House aide I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby. It's rare enough for reporters to become witnesses. But the Libby case is even more unusual because journalists will be dueling witnesses — some called by the defense team, some by prosecutors.

"It will be unprecedented and, as far as I'm concerned, horrifying," Lucy Dalglish, executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, said of the case, for which jury selection begins in two weeks.

Prosecutors want to show that Libby lied to investigators about his conversations with journalists regarding outed CIA officer Valerie Plame, and they are expected to rely on former New York Times reporter Judith Miller, Time magazine reporter Matthew Cooper and NBC Washington bureau chief Tim Russert to make their case.

"Now, Mr. President, before I pee in panties at being so-o-o-o close to a powerful 'War President' and billionaire, please repeat for us what your handlers are trying to tell you through your ear piece...oh, I've got it here, I'll read it to you....'the slaughter of 600,000 people is a small price to pay to bring freedom to Iraqis...', no, oops, I'm reading some tripe from the American Enterprise Institute...but if you want to say something like that, just leave out the number... I'll edit it out for you... just say freedom a couple of times....and my question was....gee, what was it?, my 'questioning of government officials,' ...oh, yeah, what did you get from Santa this Christmas?"

I hope that their interrogation on the stand, under the steely eyes of Mr. Fitzgerald, exposes their utter collusion on this war. He's calling them for the specific purpose of establishing Libby's lies, but I hope that the fallout is the discrediting of toadying, war profiteering, corporate news monopoly "journalism" forever more.

3. Outing Valerie Plame was A CRIME. What is horrifying is the idea that

witnesses to that crime ("journalists") think they can hide behind their profession's legitimate protections to aid and abet criminals. If they don't cooperate they ought to be charged with conspiracy.
