Or perhaps if you you had it to do all over again would you might have stood up to the Freepers who were terrorizing Al Gore and his family at his residence in DC around the clock?

And would you have maybe have made the trip to Florida with Jesse Jackson and others and have demanded that the votes be counted and maybe even gotten militant about it like the Republican thugs got militant to stop the counting?

With what you know now what do you all think? Do we need to be a bit more accommodating to the Republicans and show more comity with them and agree with their non-stop bullshit?

Or do we need to get a little more into their faces perhaps?

Whats the way to go here do you think?

Don

2. The Republicans got militant over it
Should we just stand and complain next time something like this happens?

4. We have become quite accomplished at keeping our powder dry.
They fight to the death. We maintain decorum. They win. We lose.

7. I remember being told I was being melodramatic
after the Supreme Court committed treason and I wrote "Americans will die because of this decision." Just call me Nostradamus.

I also remember hearing, "Come on, how much harm can he do?" I guess we know now.

14. That's more Cassandra than Nostradamus.
Correct predictions, always ignored.

3. You're talking about two different things.
What we know now, most of the country didn't know then. They didn't believe George would be so off the range. Those of us who did, we yelled and screamed and marched as much as we could, but the press was wholly behind George and delighted in making us look like fools. (And I hope every single one of them involved in that faces personal bankruptcy under BushCo laws.)

So acting differently back then....really no point in discussing it.

How we act now? Whole other ballgame. I have no problem with outright vengeance here. When I was a little girl, selfish to the bone, my mother's response to every selfish act was to say, "How would you feel if it was done to YOU?" It was excellent instruction. With every turn of the screw and twist of the knife, we must ask the Republicans "How does it feel? Really? We didn't like it much either." It's past time these bastards were toilet trained. They've been shitting all over us for years.

6. When you say "us Dems" ?
most voters I knew didn't catch much 'news'.

Presumably the Dem Party could have called for direct action through their lists

That would have been an end run around the 'Media'

I still think there was a deeper coup

8. Let's hope that we will not sit silent again.
In our defense, not a lot of people believed that the election was being stolen. Even now, there is a republican Florida congressman being seated this week in spite of evidence of votes not being counted.
I hope that the democratic congress takes up this issue and kicks him out.

9. Overstatement or what?
Terrorizing Al Gore and his family- bollocks. The rude fucks were annoying at worst. that hardly translates to terror. And the Secret Service weren't about to let them get anywhere near Gore or his family.

Not to mention that dems fought damn hard in the immediate aftermath of the 2000 election. You're selling them short by pretending they didn't.

12. I don't think standing up in firm opposition is a breach of manners.
One person, or ten, or a thousand, or a million, can resist and actively oppose with dignity, if they choose to do so. You don't have to become the enemy to defeat them, and you don't have to devolve into a stereotypical bully to do so, either.

On the day of the Congressional certification of the selection , three of us, two of us are here on DU. (I have a born again screen name after the last election.)

They told us that they were going to work with the "Republican Moderates" and that they were protecting Clinton from prosecution, a deal we were told. I told them they had killed all the Moderates (very fateful statement) and that Clinton did not need protecting.

They said "no democrat will vote against the certification". They meant the Senate. The house had some patriots at least.

On edit: Also protested an O'Connor visit to a meeing in Minneapolis that same year. A third DUer took a punch to the face from a "passerby" with the Minneapolis police looking on. Tracked the person down but he could not get charges pressed on the guy. No longer feel safe in Minneapolis.
