I think alot of DUers who are understandably peeved at Ford would be quite surprised by Ford's opinion of the ultra-Liberal Trudeau. The following is a little excerpt from an interesting article.
Asked just how the two leaders became trusted friends and colleagues, "Ford said they were personally compatible, whatever the differences in the political traditions they came from, and quickly developed a relationship based on mutual respect. "We both had a tremendous admiration for the other person's integrity and forthrightness and that was also a catalyst."
...
Ford scoffed at suggestions, levelled by many conservative-minded Canadians, that Canada under Trudeau was not always a true friend of the U.S. and the Western alliance as they stood against the Soviet Union during the days of the Cold War. "He was always very supportive of our policy of strength, vis-a-vis, the Soviet Union," Ford said. "He never undercut the U.S. military programs or policies. Now, he may have had some reservations, but he never undercut us publicly."
Ford also took aim at another myth among conservatives concerning Trudeau. He said Trudeau was highly- respected and his concerns and views were considered immediately at the Ford White House. "They
would be very quickly acknowledged," Ford said, adding that he was as close with Trudeau as he was with the leaders of France, Britain, Germany and other senior members of the Western alliance.
Politics and the world scene aside, Ford said he was able to glimpse the private Trudeau when he visited Canada, as a former president, in 1983.
"To show another illustration of our friendship, I had a speech in Ottawa and Pierre heard I was coming and invited me to come and have breakfast with him before I made my speech," Ford said. "He and I were sitting here, having breakfast, and his three young boys came down to say they were leaving for school. He was a devoted father. And I was much impressed with how he handled the marital problems and so forth. A classy fellow."
Ford said that a good relationship, like he had with Trudeau, is definitely important when it comes to the overall issue of Canadian-American relations. He said this still applies today."
