Corpulent capitalist couples not getting commie kids...
NPR...not the Onion.

China will not allow "obese" people to adopt children, and among other requirements want an income of 80 grand and up.

Oh, and you can't have been on any depression medication.

1. 80 grand!? Well, they better not be too hasty dumping dollars then...
...if they want to keep a viable pool of potential parents at that income level...

Or maybe they don't...

4. regarding obese people and China's new policy
I mentioned this new restriction of China to my neighbor, who adopted a Chinese child about four years ago. Here's what she told me. It has me thinking twice about this restriction.

When my neighbor, who is also my good friend, went to China to get her daughter, it was a structured trip. She and her husband went with many other couples (as in hundreds) who were adopting. There were also quite a few single women, some of whom were obese.

She told me that sometimes the obese women had trouble keeping up with the group. She gave me some examples of things that they couldn't do (pertained to interaction with the children), but I can't remember the story well enough to repeat it here. Bottom line is that an obese mother had trouble keeping up with a child.

I protested: "But obese people need love, too!"

Long story short, my neighbor thinks this is a good restriction. She pointed out how strenuous raising a child is. She also pointed out the health problems of obese people. It was sobering.

I hadn't thought about it from this aspect.

Then I thought about how I adopted two kittens in October. Since I wanted two black kittens, I could barely even find a shelter who would let me adopt. There's a no-black-cats adopted rule for October. I was turned away from most shelters. Finally I found one who would let me have the kittens in October, but I had to go through quite an interview.

Next I had to provide the name of my vet. They called my vet to find out if I brought my cats in regularly for shots. I also had to tell them how much time I would spend with the cats and who would care for them in the event of illness or death on my part. I had to sign papers saying I would take them in for shots at certain times. They would not let me adopt if I planned on letting the cats go outdoors.

OK, so my point is that we have restrictions for the adoption of pets. Why shouldn't China put in restrictions that they feel are in the best interests of the children?

5. Glad they are not restricting 'obese' aunts, uncles, grandparents...
My sister and brother-in-law adopted from China, twice. My sister is the only 'thin' person in my entire family. Everyone else would be considered 'obese'. Of course, my sister was 40 and her husband 47 when they first adopted. They are now 45 and 52. My 'thin, healthy' sister is constantly tired from taking care of two young children. Maybe they should restrict the ages of adopting parents as well? Maybe test them by making them run after a couple of 2 year olds for a few hours? even 'thin' people can have trouble keeping up with kids. This is a bullshit regulation. Fat people are no worse parents than thin ones.
