Bush Calls On Democrats To Work With Him

(AP) WASHINGTON President Bush, facing a Democratic-controlled Congress for the first time, is urging lawmakers to work with his administration and warning that "political statements" in the form of legislation would result in a stalemate.

"Together, we have a chance to serve the American people by solving the complex problems that many don't expect us to tackle, let alone solve, in the partisan environment of today's Washington," Bush wrote in a guest column for The Wall Street Journal posted on the newspaper's Web site Tuesday night.

"To do that, however, we can't play politics as usual," he said. "Democrats will control the House and Senate, and therefore we share the responsibility for what we achieve."

Bush, while sounding a tone of bipartisanship on the eve of the new session of Congress that begins Thursday, repeated long-held positions on the war in Iraq, tax cuts and other issues often criticized by Democrats. He has vetoed only one bill, but he reminded readers that the Constitution calls on the president to use his judgment in deciding which bills to sign into law.

"If the Congress chooses to pass bills that are simply political statements, they will have chosen stalemate," Bush wrote. "If a different approach is taken, the next two years can be fruitful ones for our nation. We can show the American people that Republicans and Democrats can come together to find ways to help make America a more secure, prosperous and hopeful society."

COMMENTARY

What the Congress Can Do for America
By GEORGE W. BUSH
January 3, 2007

Tomorrow, members of the 110th Congress will take their oaths of office here in Washington. I will have the privilege of working with them for the next two years -- one quarter of my presidency, plenty of time to accomplish important things for the American people.

Together, we have a chance to serve the American people by solving the complex problems that many don't expect us to tackle, let alone solve, in the partisan environment of today's Washington. To do that, however, we can't play politics as usual. Democrats will control the House and Senate, and therefore we share the responsibility for what we achieve.

In the days and weeks since the November elections, I have been encouraged by the productive meetings I've had with many of the new leaders in Congress from both parties. I am hopeful we can find common ground without compromising our principles.

I believe we share many of the same goals for the people we serve -- and with good will and hard effort, we can find practical ways to advance the American Dream and keep our nation safe.

My principles are no secret. I have campaigned on them in my races for governor and in two presidential contests, and I have worked hard during my presidency to translate these principles into sound policy.

11. "But we can help Iraq defeat the extremists inside and outside of Iraq"
from the Wall Street Journal

snip...
Our priorities begin with defeating the terrorists who killed thousands of innocent Americans on September 11, 2001 -- and who are working hard to attack us again. These terrorists are part of a broader extremist movement that is now doing everything it can to defeat us in Iraq.

In the days ahead, I will be addressing our nation about a new strategy to help the Iraqi people gain control of the security situation and hasten the day when the Iraqi government gains full control over its affairs. Ultimately, Iraqis must resolve the most pressing issues facing them. We can't do it for them.

But we can help Iraq defeat the extremists inside and outside of Iraq -- and we can help provide the necessary breathing space for this young government to meet its responsibilities. If democracy fails and the extremists prevail in Iraq, America's enemies will be stronger, more lethal, and emboldened by our defeat. Leaders in both parties understand the stakes in this struggle. We now have the opportunity to build a bipartisan consensus to fight and win the war.

3. 'repeated long-held positions on the war in Iraq, tax cuts and...'

............Bush, while sounding a tone of bipartisanship on the eve of the new session of Congress that begins Thursday, repeated long-held positions on the war in Iraq, tax cuts and other issues often criticized by Democrats.

Bush planned to meet with his Cabinet to discuss domestic priorities on Wednesday and to court key lawmakers at a social reception that evening. He is under pressure to announce a new Iraq strategy, although officials say he is still making decisions and will not reveal any changes this week, and is expected to say he is sending additional U.S. troops to Iraq.

Wednesday's schedule represents Bush's official return to work after a Christmas vacation at his Texas ranch. Bush spoke at the funeral of President Ford on Tuesday but remained out of sight the remainder of the day.

6. "bills that are political statements..." Huh?
Like the bankruptcy bill, for example?

I am out of words for President Halfwit. The man is pathological and needs to be locked up. I sincerely hope that the Democrats do not get suckered into this bipartisanship trap. We need to be as ruthless as the repiglicans have been for the past six years. The republican party is on the ropes. Finish it off.

that "man" is incapable of stringing together anything beyond the infamous Pet Goat book that he struggled to read....a more accurate indication of his intellectual abilities would be portrayed by the pathetic bagpiper in Grand Rapids at Ford's Funeral...

22. But reminded us?
", but he reminded readers that the Constitution calls on the president to use his judgment in deciding which bills to sign into law."

Is he saying that he thinks that the Constitution gives him Executive Privilege over the Senate and the House? Like his signing statements?

We've got to do something about that...write the Bills so he can't repeal them immediately...

Hail, King George...
