Senior Iraqi Interior Ministry official: "The execution was carried out by militias and outsiders."

"There was an infiltration at the execution chamber."

Echoing those accusations, a senior Interior Ministry official said the hanging was supposed to be carried out by hangmen employed by the Interior Ministry but that "militias" had managed to infiltrate the executioners' team.

"The execution was carried out by militias and outsiders. They put aside the team from the Interior Ministry that was supposed to carry it out," the official said.

Iraqslogger notes an interesting post from an Iraqi news source:

<snip>

Al-Iraq News Net posts a message claiming that Muqtada Al-Sadr was the masked executioner who placed the noose around Saddam’s neck, allegedly to avenge his father, Ayatollah Mohammed Sadiq Al-Sadr, who is thought to have been assassinated by Saddam’s regime in 1991, and that the team of six masked executioners were brought by NSA Muwafaq Al-Rubai’i.

5. I am sure the Maliki government does understand
that this shows just how little control they have of the country... I mean they cannot even do a propper hanging

And no, this is not a sarcastic post, but the truth is our puppets control nothing

6. Maliki is not in charge of his government and neither is *.
It's evident in the lack of control of information surrounding this.

We need to get out NOW!!! Total withdrawal!

9. I've missed so much news this morning.
Remind me that grocery shopping is not a priority errand.

I think you are right about that.

13. I don't believe for a minute the BS that they told them to wait
Pure and simple BULLSHIT. Bush had it in his power and authority to delay it because the US had custody of Saddam Hussein.

10. This is the mother of all screw-ups. If Saddam wasn't a martyr before he sure as hell is now.
I read here earlier that the execution occurred on an American base. Is that confirmed?

How can something this important be allowed to go so wrong? I mean they had to know the entire world was going to be looking at this. This was the execution of a head of state for crying out loud! What kind of imbeciles were in charge of this? Militia infiltration of the execution chamber. OMG.

We are in desperate need of competent leadership.

14. from Reuters:
<snip>

He said it was clear Saddam knew he was about to die when, an hour before the dawn execution, the former president of Iraq was bundled aboard a U.S. military helicopter for the 10-minute flight to an Iraqi-run prison in northern Baghdad.

15. Short version: It was a lynching.
And, like most lynchings, it was a nasty business carried out by thugs.

17. They should have dumped Saddam's beaten body outside a Sunni mosque.
Mob style. That would have seemed apropos for the way this was handled. It would have also given Bush a chubby.
