6. Death doesn't confer sainthood, no matter how many days
of imperial pomp celebrates the corpse.

Please try to understand this isn't a criticism of the man. It's a criticism of his overstuffed, pompous, full of itself, imperial party.

Three days should be sufficient and it can be shown on the evening news, not blow by blow in breathless breaking news announcements 24/7.

Besides, it's a terrible thing to put his widow through. Many of us remember Mrs. Ford as having uncommon courage, bringing the two taboo subjects of breast cancer and women's substance abuse out into the open. She deserves better than this at the age of 88. She deserves her privacy.

32. I doubt that would have happened on the following schedule:
Day 1: funeral home, embalming.
Night 1: transit to Washington, DC
Day 2: formal lying in state in the Rotunda.
Night 2: transit to Michigan
Day 3: funeral in the church of the family's choice followed by private graveside ceremony and interment.

Had it not been another marathon imperial funeral driving all other news off the networks, I'm sure he wouldn't have been referred to as a pig.

You're hearing frustration from party overkill for someone who really was a minor figure for most of his term.

7. I know I'm tired of all the funeral coverage too, but to be just a little
fair, Fordwas100% betterthan the Pubs of today! You may not agree with anything he did, but I really do think he was trying to do what he thought was right, as opposed to ShrubCo that does his own think and the hell with everyone and the World!

Just switch the channel already! I've been watching a lot of FoodTV for the last several days, and there's always the game shows too! Sometimes they even make you smile!!!

but channel flipping I can see that the orgy is still in full swing.

ford was maybe 1% or 2% better than the current generation of vermin. maybe.

but he played his evil little role in the fascist takeover of the repuke party and America.

15. I actually thinkthebeginning of the current surge of Corp America
was Reagan, and as much as I hate to say it, the Dems aren't any better! All politicians are solidly on the side ofCorp. power because THAT'S where they get most of their money! Ibelieve Clinton was 100% better Prez than Shrub could ever hope to be, but even BC gave us the WTO and NAFTA!

Sorry, I just can't balme it all on Ford.

22. I don't think anyone blames it all on ford
he was a dull-witted, affable functionary who did what the repuke pwers told him to do

in the case of his "presidency," that was to sweep the repuke disease under the rug so the party could come back, this time under the control of the rising neocon, fake libertarian and religiously insane nut-job coalition that they were building. ford did what they wanted.

JFK was murdered, a shock to the nation for which one can rationalize extended grieving.

ford was barely a president, serving just long enough to pardon traitors and to sanction genocide and he finally died at 90 frigging 3 after teasing us with poor health for years.

stick him in the ground and be done with it. he wasn't a fucking king.

that upped the sense a loss a bit. Hence the mourning.
a 93 year old man dying of old age, while sad, isn't the same deal.

40. Good God! JFK had his head blown off while serving as president,
and riding in an open car with his WIFE in the streets of an American city, at the age of 46.

I hardly think that is the same as an ex-president dying at the ripe old age of 93, having led what most people say was a good, satisfying life.

Not exactly comparable. Yeah, I was upset, too, when "Father Knows Best" got preempted, but really, it was kind a big trauma for the country, you know.

I actually voted for Ford. (Yeah, I know, I know.) But the other evening, while the TV was still on as I lay down to go to bed, and the Gerald Ford business came up YET AGAIN, on TWO DIFFERENT NEWS CHANNELS, I was kind of, well, sick of it.

Whenever Hillary Clinton dies, you will hear something from Greater Wingnuttia that will make you feel totally vindicated in your outrage over the original poster having called "poor old Gerry" a pig. So don't worry.

30. I'm not going to say I'm glad Ford is dead.
But I will say that of the two states Ford could be in, living and dead, I prefer the latter.

I don't see what's the big deal about being happy that some people are dead. Everybody's happy that somebody's dead. I myself am happy the list of dead includes Reagan, Nixon, Rutherford C. Hayes, Caligula, Al Capone, Tony Montana, Professor Moriarty, Hitler, Stalin, Jesus's perverted Uncle Frank, and the real Rue McClanahan.

39. Oh, look., here's another "old hog" who died
Now's your chance to light into him.

Former Sen. Robert Stafford, a staunch environmentalist and champion of education whose name is familiar to countless college students through a loan program named for him, died Saturday. He was 93.

<snip>

Stafford, who once considered himself conservative, even hawkish, wasn't shy about bucking presidents of his own party. He led a successful effort to override President Reagan's veto of amendments that strengthened the Clean Water Act, and tangled with industry when he believed it was thwarting efforts to clean the environment.

<snip>

http://www.boston.com/news/globe/obituaries/articles/20... /

Conservatives like Stafford believed in small but responsible government and they weren't bigots, as evidenced by this statement from Stafford in 2000:

"I consider that love is one of the great forces in our society and especially in our state of Vermont," Stafford said days before the election. "It occurs to me that even if a same-sex couple unites in love, what harm does that do anybody or any society? So I felt compelled to come here and say that."

42. They're just trying to set precedent for unelected Presidents.
Personally, I hope they bury Bush beneath a public urinal in New Orleans and then celebrate his life with two weeks of free beer and pretzels and Honorable Discharges for everyone in the military who goes AWOL.

But the weirdest thing about all this fuss is that I still haven't figured out why we put the flags at half mast for Saddam Hussein.
