A silly question for Vietnam Vets

How was the mail service? My little taxi explorations have led me to talk to a couple people about how much communication they get from loved ones in Iraq and for the most part its been pretty abysmal. Just wanted a comparison.

1. IIRC, for letters it was OK unless you were you were out and about.

Parcel post sucked; packages sometimes would take over a month.

2. I've been hearing soldiers will get months of letters at once

20 minutes a month for phone calls. Again dependent on deployment area but htey can't even tell their family where in Iraq they are. Letters are addressed to a central processing office at the soldier's base in the states.

3. You have to understand we had MILITARY postal clerks

Mail was around 10 days as I recalled to my stock base. :)

Plus we had military COOKs...

4. I learned to tolerate Super-Cs because the mess halls I was

around sucked. About the only Super-C I could not eat was the ham and lima beans.

5. But the mess hall traveled with you for the most part.

You did not have to wait months eating MREs until Halliburton felt it was "safe" to send in their cooks.

6. Variable. Most of the time it was only a few days

a week or so.

But the expectations then were not as high as now. No email or phones.

Packages you could get were usually smashed, their contents, if edible at one point, no longer so.

There were always exceptions. I once got cookies from an aunt which were fresh.
