The coming battle
Is going to be between investigators and spindoctors. Iraq is boned. If we stay we insite hatred and destruction. If we leave we allow hatred and destruction. The mistake of Iraq was going there in the first place.

So over the next two years with the repugs are going to do everything in their bag of dirty tricks to make sure that every death and every misstep in Iraq is layed at our feet. And it will work. They have the media and they have the money to make the spin work.

The only thing we have is the ability to investigate. With the retaking of the Senate we can now call for and oversee proper investigations into the cause of this war and its continued execution. The Dems have to lay bare every ugly truth about how this war came about and expose it to the people for all to see. This is the only way we can hold off the coming GOP counter effort to spin all the problems onto our backs.

2. I personally do not believe that the Democrats have the stomach
for it. I believe that most of the Democrats will fold and hedge their positions to protect their places. I hope - I pray - that I will be proved wrong. I hope - I pray - that at some point in the future someone reproduces this post and demands that I eat crow. I will eat that crow with relish...

3. I may be a bit biased
You see Michigan has this guy as a Senator.

Carl Levin has been one of the most persistant investigators of the Bush admin. I know Carl and I know he won't give up. He may not be the most exciting Senator around but damn the guy is tenacious. I know Carl is on the trail. I just have to hope he's not alone.

4. I agree that there are a number of Democrats in congress who
will do their jobs and represent the people - Levin undoubtedly is one. I just don't have confidence in large numbers of them holding together and withstanding the shit-storm that is coming. As I said, I hope I am wrong...

6. I'm a pessimist too.
By nature, but looking at recent political history doesn't encourage me.

8. I don't think its a choice on their part
If they try to weak and spineless route they are going to wind up with Iraq all over their face. The repugs are going to fight for their life. And the only way they have of surviving is to distance themself from Iraq without appearing to run from it. And the only way to do that is to dump it on our shoulders. The only way we have of stopping that is to pin it squarely on their shoulders. And that requires investigations.

7. Personally I do not want it over quickly
I hope to see the republican party and in particular the NeoCons and their agenda dissected alive before the population. The people need to be made to see the dangers their thinking represents. We were dragged into a war for political purposes. A war that every expert that ever studied the matter said was foolish and worse. The war was inspired by politics and cultural warfare. The people that supported this need to be made very very uncomfortable. And having those who lead us into this pit taken apart may go some way to seeing that this does not happen again for at least a short period of time.

9. Since charges of wrongdoing by the administration are off the table,
what exactly are these investigations for? Political posturing? To lay proper blame as a discussion point?
