Rep. Keith Ellison sworn in with the Koran

http://thinkprogress.org/2007/01/04/ellison-koran/

Today, following the official swearing-in ceremony for the 110th Congress, Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) was photographed with his wife Kim and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA). Ellison and Pelosi placed their hands on a copy of the Koran once owned by Thomas Jefferson.

“Look at that. That’s something else,” Ellison said, as officials from the Library of Congress showed him the Koran, which was published in London in 1764. “Oh my God. This is great.”

And Ellison did not leap out with a sword and decapitate
the House members and produce a mini nuclear bomb?

Freepers must be in shock. They are so silly.

3. The official swearing-in isn't with the Koran or the Bible, either...
yet the headline ignores the correct wording in the article just the same, because the public's not sophisticated enough, I guess.

7. Forgive me for being a stickler - I think it's important to dispell
lies by the right.

He was sworn in WITHOUT a Koran in one fell swoop with other Congresspeople. Noone was sworn in with religious books of any kind.

All new inductees raised their right hand with the their left at the side and presto, they were all sworn in.

For photo purposes and after the official swearing in, he stood next to Speaker Pelosi and his family with his left hand on Jefferson's Koran, on loan. His right hand was raised. There was no swearing in. The only voice was from the photographer, followed by a greeting from Speaker Pelosi.

So he wasn't sworn in with the Koran.

Freepers can perpetuate a lie for years, on purpose or by confusion or believing what others say.

We need to retell it correctly until the right wing supporters and corporate network tv gets it correct. No Koran when he was sworn in.

9. agreed... but

WHO GIVES A SHIT?

There is NOTHING that says this country is christian, jewish, muslim, or buddhist. while god or a "creator" is (unfortunately) mentioned repeatedly by the founding fathers in official documents, no frickin christer-rightwing assholes have ANY right to object to WHATEVER this guy wants to put his hand on. Their haranguing about this is absolutely equivalent to extremists demanding an islamic state, and i resent the shit out of it. So I don't want to argue the point that he wasn't "really" sworn in using the koran - I wish he HAD been.

I am tempted to run for office so I can be sworn in with my hand on a copy of Don McLean's "American Pie".

14. I might be sworn in a couple of different versions of Utopia or
a flower petals and pine needles - point is why not be accurate to stop a lie when we know that they have such difficulty learning the truth?
