Proposal: Nancy Pelosi should fine Repubs for using "Democrat" as an adjective during working hours.
Edited on Fri Jan-05-07 01:12 AM by BurtWorm
It can just be a "friendly" fine, like so many $ into a fund that will be given to the charity of Pelosi's choice at the end of the year. But it would be great to see a high-profile assault on Republican no-knowthingness (and willful mangling of English).

4. Inasmuch as one should call people what they WANT to be called, until
John Boehner reliably speaks of the Democratic Party I propose that all Democrats call him Leader Boner.

The misuse doesn't bother me like it seems to bother so many around here.

12. Cuz you don't see the power of word & terminology...
Edited on Fri Jan-05-07 04:08 AM by LaPera
Republicans were told to use "Democrat" whether it's good grammar, fits or not because it been proven the correct use of the word (in many cases) "Democratic" instills sort of a likability, niceness, fuzziness, they despise...They use it out of context purposely for a very good reason...it's certainly not coincidental, why do republican ALL just happen to use it "wrongly"?

Quite obvious why!

26. How would you feel about "Kike Party" or "Nigger Party"?
That's how they intend the use to be taken.

27. I do feel. Those words have completely different
histories that go far beyond insult or disrespect.

I call Pukes Pukes. I don't think that's the same as denigrating somebody based on race.

18. I'd disagree, they mean it as an insult, and if I remember correctly it is impossible...
to insult another member of the House on the floor. Remember Mean Jean, and what she said to Murtha? She had to retract her statement, because of the House Rules. They ought to amend the rules to include Democrat as intended as an insult, in the rules of the House in the same section which prohibits insulting other members.

20. It also emphasizes the syllable "crat", an unpleasant at best sound.
Moreover, it is off-putting, having two accented, hard consonants in proximity: "-crat" "P(arty)". I.e., it doesn't sound "right" to the ear, a subliminal negative.

I know I've seen it on the cover of an Alan Parsons album, but I don't know what it is.

6. It is doubly insulting when some publiclown, as happened on
cspin this morning, talks about "respect" and hypocrisy and "bipartisanship" and then refers to the "democrat" party, the "democrat" committee members, and other such trash talk. These people are such transparent buffoons. Both Howdy Doody and that other little bespectacled idiot-the youngest representative at 32-pulled this trick today and were among the loudest whiners the rest of the day.

And yes, I know I am using terms of disrespect when I refer to them, but I make no claims of respecting them-any of them-even the supposed "moderate" repub-o-crats.

17. John Boehner's office denied yesterday that he said "Democrat Party."
They said, "But if you read his website, it SAYS 'Democratic.'"

Perhaps.

But that is NOT what came out of BONER'S mouth.

We'll call him BONER until he starts calling us the Democratic Party.

When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking.... BONER.

19. how I handled it with a R-winger
it's our resident bush lover..

I mentioned to him that it was the DEMOCRATIC party and not the democrat party, and how it was disrespectful to continue to call it the Democratic party.. (this all followed a discussion on how we have to respect bush)

ennywhoo - he pretty much blew it off as "that's different"

over the next several days he would make it a point to refer to Democratics as Democrats and on and on and on. and I would correct him

one day, while in a filled lunch room, he said Democrat blah blah blah, when I didn't correct him, he asked why.

me: (sigh) well, I've been trying to teach you that the correct term is Democratic, but after several weeks you still haven't grasped that concept. So rather than embarass you over your learning disability, I decided not to say anything.

And if anybody complains, I tell 'em "when you get OUR party's name right, I'll be glad to return the favor."
