6. I think it is incrediably naive and dangerous to think that "equality

is the unavoidable fate of civilization". It is actually mind-boggling to read this. People have had to undergo tremendous hardship for attain human rights let alone equal rights. It has been nothing but struggle. There is nothing about civilization per se that makes equality a given. Some of the oldest civilizations in the world are based on inequality (eg the caste system in India). The examples are manifold.

I could go back in time and tell varous crusaders that their causes will be successful and that they're not fighting in vain.

It's awful to think that some of them must have died thinking that the cause they were fighting for was hopeless.

12. there was a great PBS series once on the Pankhurst Sisters

On Masterpiece Theater there was a series called "Shoulder to Shoulder" about Christabel and Emmeline Pankhurst and their battle for womens' suffrage in England. Arrests, imprisonment, force feeding, etc. It really showed me the horrors that women have gone thru to get the vote.

I believe they battled the Establishment in England for more years to get the vote than they did here in America, but I could be wrong.
