Sen Susan Collins: What'd you do to my mail bill, Mr. Prez?
What'd you do to my mail bill, Mr. Prez?

BY JAMES GORDON MEEK
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) demanded that President Bush explain his statement claiming right to open Americans’ mail without warrant.

WASHINGTON - The Republican sponsor of a postal reform bill called on President Bush yesterday to explain why he used it to claim he can open domestic mail without a search warrant.
Sen. Susan Collins of Maine questioned Bush's controversial Dec. 20 "signing statement" in which he stated if there were an emergency he wouldn't need a warrant to open letters. The bill he signed into law that day, co-sponsored by Collins, requires search warrants for mail.

"It is my hope that the administration will clarify its intent with this recent statement," said Collins, a GOP moderate.

The former Senate Homeland Security Committee chairwoman added that she has long had concerns about Bush's broad use of signing statements that attempt to reinterpret laws passed by Congress.

But White House spokesman Tony Snow insisted that "there is nothing new here."

6. Senator Collins should renounce her party affiliation
and come over to the light. She ought to bring Senator Snowe with her.

8. That would be perfect. It would make Lieberman a comma.

14. Lieberman will be a comma in 2008 anyway. I think as many as
21 Republican senate seats will be open and a third of them are already in trouble.

13. They're old-school business republicans.
They are not like the democrats in Maine by a long shot. They are Maine republicans through and through.
Especially since Collins represents the conservative northern districts of Maine, it would probably be political suicide to switch parties.

Olympia? Well she's just Olympia and there is apparently nothing you can do to get rid of her.

:sigh:

I love Boxer but Fienstein... yuck... but sometimes, sometimes, better than a rethug.

20. Correct. The hijacking of the Repug party by Southern wingnuts has.....
made the old, traditional, New England Repug party an endangered species.

I predicted this years ago but never thought the changover would occur so quickly. NE is going blue and these type repugs better switch or we're coming to get them.

18. Yup. She needs to bust out of the repug puke-hole or face.........
the same election result that Lincoln Chafee got.

She's got about one year to switch over or she's going to get KO'd by the Big Blue Machine.

7. It's quite simple - Der Fuhrer doesn't give a flying fuck any more
He's in the last two years of his presidency, he can't run for reelection. He knows that much of America hates him anyways. Do you think he gives a rat's ass anymore? He's going to do whatever the fuck he wants, Constitution be damned.

Exactly why I posted somewhat sarcastically yesterday about him suspending the US Congress.

9. At least Snowjob's not lying, for once
Bush's signing statements thumbing his nose at Congress is certainly nothing new.

10. Sen. Collins, it seems your party is an increasingly ill fit for you.
Why not consider becoming a Democrat?

While I have no illusions that you will magically transform yourself into my personal definition of a Perfect Liberal (incidentally, there's no Democrat who fits that definition, either!), it does seem that the Democratic Party might be a better fit.

We're working to get things done for America, to get our country back on track and put an end to the very sort of political abuses you decry in this Republican administration.

If you're willing to roll up your sleeves and get to work with us, I'm pretty sure you'd be welcomed.

Pottery Barn rule - you break it you own it

with looking at our mail, I suggest a variation -- YOU OPEN IT - YOU PAY IT.

I have no problem with bush looking at my bills as long as he pays them...
