3. M$M are ignoring the event
remember who owns them, and it shouldn't be a surprise. Important for us to tell folks to go online to get real news.

5. I know it I just couldn't believe I was so naive as to think they would actually do their jobs
When we loose so goes them too but they can't for some reason see that I guess

4. I don't watch much television news, but I turned it on yesterday.
Not so much for what I might see, but to get a feeling for what quick impression America might get from the coverage. You're right -- most of the visuals were stills from the chamber, and most of the verbiage was quick and dismissive. In other words, for people who don't read much past the headlines and who might not parse the issues, it will be very easy to get on board the "this doesn't mean much" train.

I imagine how different things might be if, just for the one day, before they move on to diminish Pelosi or the new committee chairs, they gave the handover of power a measure of respect, a moment of solemnity, maybe couched in some words of its historical nature. Maybe then, even if just for a day, those people who tune in just to test the direction of the wind would take note of some circumstance, a bit of the substance of the procedure. The next day at the office their impressions would be, "Wow, I guess it's a bigger deal than I thought," or "That was as dignified as any swearing in I've seen. I don't see why anyone would be concerned about Pelosi not being up to the job."

First impressions are key, especially when they're the only impression a lot of the country gets.

14. didn't they do that yesterday?

At least that's what I read about what happened yesterday. She was on the front page of every paper I saw.

17. I read plenty of that too, but I didn't see it on TV.
From the CSPAN threads yesterday, I was pretty hyped to get off work and catch some video, but my local news just showed a still shot of the swearing in and then moved almost immediately to discussing how the new Congress is at odds with the president's "surge" plan. In my mind, it was a historic day, a change in power against stacked odds, and the first day of what I hope is momentous change in oversight -- but someone who doesn't follow politics probably thinks, "Whatever."

I guess for comparison (though the media climate is pretty different now) I'd like to see video news coverage of the swearing in of Newt Gingrich in 1994. I suspect that was accompanied by some serious fanfare.

I guess to more directly address your post, I think there's a stark difference between newspaper coverage and television news (especially local).

18. true the local news is usually highly unsophisticated
I didn't see anything about the new congress on tv news here, but since this is a highly dem. area and Altmire (who defeated PA Rep. Melissa Hart) is a very big deal, I suspect the local news did do something about it.

6. Never, ever have high expectations of right wing corporate tv.
Lower your expectation at a level that is the exact opposite of GE and other partner corporations' expectations when they count their profits of war. Then, you won't be disapopinted.

10. The only thing we have between us and a tyrant is a free and honest press
We don't have the forth leg of a Democracy today and today we do have a tyrant.

11. The M$M is full of whores
--- American Heritage Dictionary

whore (hôr, hōr) Pronunciation Key
n.

1. A prostitute.
2. A person considered sexually promiscuous.
3. A person considered as having compromised principles for personal gain. ---

These people will say anything for a buck, they have "compromised principles for personal gain". I have ZERO respect for them as they are preying on the public. I also have little respect for people too stupid to figure it out, aka repukes.

The M$M is killing itself now with it's constant BS and I'm enjoying watching them go down. There are some bright thinkers thrown in with the wolves though, like Olberman and Jon Stewart.

I used to make fun of repukes for being so gullible but the crimes they support are so heinous now that I can't even stand to talk to brainwashed Chimpbots anymore.

12. I watch NBC national, they weren't too bad
They did the video clip of Madame Speaker with all the children around calling the house to order. give it time, the implosion will move at warp speed before long, then you'll see the media shitting their pants to cover the news.

15. I was hoping when my wife got home she could have watched some if not all of what Nancy
had to say but it wasn't to be. its like they don't want us to have any fun at all. They lie to us all the time, for instance when we win the majority they say we only won by the skim of our teeth when the facts were much different. Not one Democratic incumbent lost his seat but you wouldn't know that by listening to the local news or reading their papers. Not every one has an internet connection or even want one, hell, I resisted it as long as I could, looking back I wished I would have gone online long before I did but I didn't.

16. It's probably on you tube
or maybe on the official Dem homepage, somebody here might have archived it or maybe whiterose has it. that's one of the great things about living today if you miss something when it happens there's always someplace else to watch it later.
