So, if your town appears to be skipping winter this year, check in.
It's in the 40s again this week. In January, in northern Indiana. We had snow once in October. Since then it's been like a Texas winter. Like Texas winters were before this year, I mean.

It ain't right.

Anyone else feeling strange forebodings of climate change this winter?

I merely ask,

The Plaid Adder

LOL
I'm not laughing at you--I have a neighbor who uses that expression every time we talk about the weather. If it's warm, "we're gonna pay for this, y'know". If it's cold, "We're gonna pay for this, y'know". In other words, my neighbor always thinks we're gonna pay for the weather, no matter what. It's become a private joke between me and hubby. Whenever something good happens, we look at each other and say "We're gonna pay for this, y'know".

You should have had a few small snow/ice "events" by now. :wow: And even when it doesn't snow, the temps should be lower, with rain and the wind that goes right through you.

96. And the Christmas decorations are still up!
I was on the Hill the other day and walked past some blooming trees. Then I got to Union Station and saw that the wreaths and lights were still up! We've had thaws in both December and January before, but usually there is some actual winter weather preceding it.

However, I have also seen ice storms and blizzards at various times in previous years, including that March 8th snowfall in 1993, so I don't feel safe yet.

Even when we took a drive up north to Littleton, they had snow, but not nearly as much as we thought they should have for this time of year.

Tres bizarre.

Normally it would be pouring down rain. Right now, it's 50 degrees, and bright and sunny outside. The wind is kind of strong though, so, yeah. But normally, about since November, the rain would be coming. Hardly any this year. And the mountains have had little snow this year too.

We had no snow that actually stuck in December. It's in the 50s today with rain and the 40s are forecast for the next few days. It poured last night -- there are some good features to global warming -- all that rain could have been snow. Same thing New Year's Eve -- all the rain we had could have been snow.

Here in mid-Michigan, our December temps were 7.9 degrees above average, and it was 53 degrees outside today, when our average high this time of year is in the 20's.

The temp will be in the teens next week, so hopefully it will be cold enough for the carnival at the end of the month. But if the temperature stays above freezing all month, I don't know how they'll pull it off. It has felt like March, not January. :hi:

they just won't have any ice sculptures or an ice castle. God knows how they'll be able to hide the medallion.

BTW I don't think there's much on ice on the lakes in northern Minnesota either. I heard - from a not necessarially reliable source - that as far north as Detroit Lakes, it's not safe for an ice house.

36. About 3 weeks ago, we had one week of cold (for us anyway) weather -
19 overnight and upper 30's to 40 in the afternoons. The next weekend we were working in the yard and noticed the crepe myrtles aren't dormant and are starting leaf buds, the weeds that we normally battle in the spring are out in force, the neighbors' Bradford pear trees are budding.

It's been in the 60's this week and mosquitoes and flies are buzzing around. Feels like mid-spring.

You know--between BUFFALO and SYRACUSE--that stretch that usually gets whomped with the white stuff from late October through March...or April...sometimes MAY?

Sign at a retail establishment yesterday: "Snow Blowers Below Cost". I needed to use my snow brush on my car a total of ONCE this year.

This is out of control. It's freaking me out, man.

I mean, I kind of like not having ultra-freezing temps and constant snow, but, geez, it *is* creepy.

Last spring was really bad for people with allergies here in Upstate. All the bad stuff that's supposed to get killed off during the winter--didn't. (And of course, add in all the crap pouring into the atmosphere from Kodak and Xerox.)

I was thinking today that maybe Upstate will be the new Seattle!

Warm, like late March/early April.

I went outside and stirred the compost pile wearing a sweatshirt.

My son took down the outside decorations wearing long sleeves, no jacket.

The grass is looking green, not dead and some of my weeds are thriving and green.

This is not a typical January.

Cheers

53. Pretty normal here (Eugene OR)
Temperature close to normal, rainfall close to normal, snowpack in mountains is pretty close to normal. But there were lots of monthly extremes and wide swings which are predicted by most global warming models.

http://www.registerguard.com/news/2006/12/30/d1.cr.snowpack.1230.p1.php?section=cityregion

But when the books close on 2006, the weather balance sheet can be summed up in two words: mostly average.

Rainfall as measured at the Eugene Airport will be a trickle under 50 inches, which is just a relatively few drops shy of the 50.9-inch average.

The average temperature of 52.6 degrees (so far) is almost dead on the 30-year average of 52.5.

And it's looking like we'll go into the new year on the same note. In the first winter snowpack measurement Friday, the Willamette basin registered a solid 99 percent of average.

"We're right about where we typically are this time of year," said hydrologist Jon Lea of the Natural Resources Conservation Service.

But normal years can have some distinctly abnormal months and weeks, and 2006 was no exception. For example, in all but three months, Eugene registered less than average rainfall and would have had a near-drought year if it hadn't been for the abnormally wet months of January and November, with just a tiny bit of help in May.

There is no question that the climate has changed.

Denver is buried under snow. We have shrubs and flowers trying to bloom.
Without snow the ski resorts are out of luck.

Droughts will likely hit the areas not getting usual winter snow to melt in the spring.

How long before people pull their head out of the sand and realize the change in weather already occurred while the Bush folks kept saying there is no evidence of global warming.

Nothing serious, but temperatures have just seemed to be below normal. We've also had 4 or 5 snowstorms this season whereas the last couple of years we're lucky to get 2 or 3.

But, back in the 70's and 80's it wasn't unusual for people to cross-country ski in the parks in town. That's impossible now, and has been for many years.

BTW, I'm in Boise, Idaho.

So far this winter, we haven't even had flurries. Not that we get that much snow every winter, anyway (I think its 10 or 12 inches, total).

Next Wednesday it will be 41--normal winter temps, but it will only last one day.

90. Plenty warm in East Tennessee, too warm for me.
We never have really bad winters, but growing up here I remember seeing snow falling or lying on the ground at least half of the time during the winter months. Always had 2 or 3 snows that measured 5" or 6" along with several "dustings." But the past few years even snow flurries are rare, and this season we've been in the upper 50's and 60's for weeks. Even a couple of low 70's. Seeing some trees that think it's already spring and are trying to bloom.

What really sucks is that it still gets fairly cold at night, and with such wide temp swings my sinuses don't know what to do!

so much rain. We had negligible snow a couple times, in October and November, maybe once in December, but nothing that stuck. This is really weird.

It's like spring. Trees are budding. It is really messed up.

Last winter was unusually harsh; 3X as much snow as usual, weeks at a time that the high never crept out of the twenties, lows all in single digits.

This winter? Lots of rain, a little snow, and some "heat waves" where we get days that actually reach the 40s.

Light snow last night, still out there in patches although it's warmed up to 37 degrees. 45 miles to the south, though, there was a white-out.

Two measurable snowfalls, both largely melted, the first one not until December 22.

Highs above freezing mostly and predicted to dip above and below freezing, but mostly above, for the rest of the first half of the month. Little snow in the forecast.

Some days have felt exactly like an Oregon winter day, highs in the 40s with mist.

Only a couple of days of subzero temperatures, and those almost entirely at night, for the past two years. Below-average snowfalls for the past two years.

This is not the Minneapolis I grew up in, land of three-foot snowfalls and highs of -36°. Even in the early 1980s, when I lived here before, subzero temperatures and blizzards made for a normal winter.

The past two winters were sort of freakish. This one is REALLY freakish.

Of course, I'm in Texas, so that's probably not as big a deal as it may seem. But so far this winter we've dropped below freezing for perhaps two nights, and have seen a smattering of snow just once.

I've only had to put the heat on in my apt. a couple times so far. Right now the windows are open and I have a pleasant breeze wafting in.

OT: I didn't know you are in northern Indiana. Whereabouts (if you don't mind saying)? I was born and raised in the Fort Wayne area. Sometimes I really miss Indiana winter. Not often, but sometimes.

The ground is soft, n'ary a bit of snow to be found. We are all astounded. We are used to getting hammered with snow. Last few years that has tapered off with this year being the most extreme case of no winter yet.

Very gray, ugly and depressing. Overcast and rainy quite a lot. On the upside I saw my neighbor take off with his little fishing boat in tow this morning--heading for the bay, heating bills have been pretty painless and there are fewer traffic accidents when the roads are not icy and snowy.

Also, called the vet to get more heartworm pills for the beagle. It's usually not necessary after about mid-November, but I've actually seen flies and mosquitoes the last few days.

It's 48, after dark. Not sure what the high was today, but probably around 60. In North Central Illinois. In January.

163. People always freak if a year is different
I DO believe in global warming, and the springs have come sooner and sooner here in Portland. I used to never plant flowers, new plants until the end of April for frost reasons, then moved to to the beginning of April, and last year, I'm sure it was the end of March. BUT that was risking it a bit as April can be cold-though not like east coast cold-and very rainy.

Anyway I remember Matcom I believe bitching (with good reason!) last year about one endless storm after the other in MA. So no matter what the weather is, people complain.

But unless it's 80 degrees in January or 30 in July I'm not freaking yet.

Two years ago we had an ice storm here in January for my kid's birthday. NOW they are predicting a possible one next weekend after the cold snap. Very regular weather here. VERY wet, then dry for a bit and cold, wet and cold, then very wet and warm, then cold and rainy, then clear and cold and windy. Hardly ever snow anymore-I'm hoping for one next week because my kids hardly remember the one that was 3 years ago. Mostly we get ICE storms. I hate ice storms! I want snow. I need to move into the hills-they get some snow every year-at sea level it's rare.

In winters past, right now we should be having ice storms, the ground should be frozen, and all plants should be dormant.. Hell, my parsley plant is going strong and hasn't died down...

its a weird winter here... I'm worried about my bulbs that are coming up in case we get a late winter..

You see there's a myth that it snows all the time in Denver. It's an urban legend. We normally get 3 or 4 minor snow storms a year here and people are playing golf 3 days later. It usually snows in the mountains to the west. Not this year. We're being told that it's just El Nino but come on.

Edited on Sat Jan-06-07 01:58 AM by Lisa
Okay, so it's got to be above freezing, or things would have frozen solid by now. But really, this is the third big rainstorm in as many weeks, and my stairwell just flooded for the second time this season (and I've had this place since 1992 and it's never done that even once, until now).

One of the other posters said that the roof of the big stadium over in Vancouver has been damaged. This right after many of the forested areas in Stanley Park were flattened (combination of high winds and overly-soft ground from so much rain).

A while back, I was fiddling around with some of the climate model output results, trying to translate the predicted changes into a format that's more understandable than just degrees. I came up with the idea of trying to fit the forecast means into existing variability for particular months here in Victoria, and as I recall, the year ended up looking like this: February, March, April, May, June, July, Portland, Portland, August, September, October, November.

Basically we would skip the two coldest months, and summer would be so warm that there isn't any local equivalent -- would have to go south to Oregon to find present-day comparisons.

Should be in the 30s, instead it's in the 50s. Haven't had snow since just after Christmas, and I don't think we had more than a dusting before Christmas either.

189. It's 61 degrees here ...
At 2 in the morning. Was 70+ degrees earlier today.

I'm in North Carolina. Hasn't snowed yet this year and I think we've had, perhaps, a week's worth of cold days; when I say cold, I mean days in the 30s.

It's weird having so many warm days in winter, but that's ok with me! Just hope we don't have snow in June, hehe!

195. Checked with the National Arbor Society. We have been moved
from Zone 8 to Zone 9 planting season. That is a major change for us.

This is a taste of what most winters will be like in a few decades. The ecological effects of a series of winters like this will be devastating. Insect pests and diseases will spread. More weather extremes like floods and droughts.

As a result of last year's warm (but not as warm as this) winter, Lyme Disease exploded in NH and MA, with thousands of new cases, the NH Public Health people told me. Luckily I caught it in time. A few more winters like this and malaria will come back to DC.

And what will happen to our forests that need a period of cold dormancy? By 2020 I wonder how many sugar maples will be left in New England. Enjoy that real maple syrup while you can.

204. Same here in Maine
And you're right about just a few of the effects. I'm wondering about the natural fishing off the coast? Will breeding happen if the ocean temperatures are permanently changed? How about salinity levels? Will the internal triggers fish have been using to migrate for thousands of years be activated?

Let's face it. Life as we know it is fucked.

207. Chapel Hill, NC Daffodils in full bloom, cherry trees blooming,
witch hazel blooming. It's been upper 60's for a week. Normal January average high is 49. We've lived here six years and I've never seen our azaleas put out a Nov-Dec bloom (although there are some types that do)like they did this year.

Our dogwoods are starting to push buds. It's scary.
