Rice to testify on Iraq before Senate committee Thursday
Rice to testify on Iraq before Senate committee Thursday

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice will go to Capitol Hill next Thursday to discuss the Bush administration's new strategy for Iraq with the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The committee's new Democratic chairman, Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, and ranking Republican, Sen. Richard Lugar of Indiana, announced a tentative schedule Friday for four weeks of hearings on Iraq, including the appearance by Rice.

In a statement announcing the hearings, Biden, an outspoken critic of the administration's Iraq policy, said their purpose is "not to revisit the past, but to help build a consensus behind a new course."

"The purpose of these hearings will be to seek an answer to the question currently dominating the national debate -- what options remain to secure America's interests in Iraq? Where do we go from here?" Biden said.

Somehow I have the feeling that it will be a bit more heated then they are making it sound.

1. You're right -- Biden is running for president
He'll use this as a soapbox ... Probably gonna be good.

8. He's been tough during previous hearings, even in the minority
I'll be interested to see how he conducts things as committee chairman, especially since he's obviously thrown his hat in the ring for '08. This will be his chance to show he's a fighter, and not willing to back down ... especially opposite Condoskeezza.

3. I'll bet that she doesn't have
any relevant documents with her and needs to produce them in a week, then when the week is up, the committee will need to subpoena them in order to see them. Then the fun begins.

29. What makes me nuts when I watch her
is the patronizing way she continually says "I can't get into that right now." I think I counted 16 times of "not discussing that at this time" in a single Tim Russert interview - not that he'd ever push the point. I once thought it would make a good drinking game, down a shot every time she says it...but I can't drink that much.

6. It should be heated
There has already been too much tip-toeing around this administration, when Republics were in control. It's time for us to demand, and get, some straight answers. With Condi, though, I don't expect much but a bobbing head, and a trembling voice, and non-answers. I hope Biden presses for straight answers, instead of evasive double-speak. Any testimony taken should be under oath.

26. I just wrote to my senator on the committe (Boxer)
to ask that all testimony be provided under oath.

I have a feeling that the request is unnecessary; Condi was such a bitch during the
confirmation hearings that I would expect Boxer to relish being able to hold her accountable.

(The amazing thing is that Condi is such a bad liar, but that doesn't stop her from
not only doing it over and again, but being huffy when caught at it!)

27. Question, followed by Rice's verbose non-answer, with a somewhat
irritated repeat of the question after five or ten minutes, to which Rice responds tartly that she is trying to answer the question, followed by another five or ten minutes of verbose non-answer and then a brief pause, at which point the questioner repeats the original unanswered question, Rice responding that she's in the middle of her answer and can't finish if she's interrupted so please don't interrupt, followed by another five or ten minutes of verbose non-answer and then silence.

When it is clear that Rice is done speaking, a follow-up question attempts to clarify any one of a hundred or so important issues related to the original question and not yet addressed by Rice, to which Rice responds that she has just answered that question, and whatever further effort the second questioner makes is then treated by Rice as an occasion for great protestations that she does not want an argument and she is sorry if her original answer was not good enough but it was the most complete and factual answer she could give.

Rinse and repeat.
