One reason why cold weather is important to New York

A whole lot less of this:

beach in the Brooklyn borough of New York, Saturday, Jan. 6, 2007. Unusually high temperatures in the low 70s
were reported in parts of New York City
on Saturday. (AP Photo/HeuiChul Kim)

1. It's a lot more serious than that. A dry winter portends a dry and droughty
summer, and that goes for all the NE states. Drought isn't good anywhere, and I imagine the slopes in VT, MA, etc., are suffering.

11. Well, we could have a rainy spring, no?
Edited on Sun Jan-07-07 09:07 AM by soothsayer
On edit, and even if it were cold right now, we've had no rain, so wouldn't have had snow (well, there was rain on xmas and some on new year's eve, so would have had some on both of those days). But that's all so far.

2. I see your point ...
... and I feel your pain.

There are consequences to Global Warming that MUST be addressed immediately -- these are two of them.

With these guys lounging on the beach at C.I., one wonders shudders to think of the impact on the sale of Nathan's hot dogs and fries.

Thanks, SoCalDem. As a native New Yorker, I appreciate your concern.

3. They may be members of the Polar Bear Club.

I think they start swimming before New Year's Day, and go throughout the winter. They've been doing it for eons.

5. The wine industry here in NY is very worried
If there isn't freezing temperatures soon, their whole crop of ice wine grapes will rot on the vines.

6. Apples
If there is not enough cold weather hours there will be few apples. And this Texan eats 1 or 2 New York Macintosh apples every day.

7. Not just apples, but all sorts of fruit trees need cold time for proper fruiting
I have a fruit orchard, and everybody here in the Midwest is worried over this very issue, this and the fact that we're entering a third year of drought.

We actually got a decent snow this year in Missouri, back in December. But since then it has been abnormally warm and snow free, though we're at least getting some rain.

18. Not to mention that the mold spores don't die off
and I'm suffering right now like I haven't in years because of it.

Gotta say, this weather is really scaring me. I keep hoping it is just a cyclical anomaly, but I am starting to think not.

12. Great pic! I'm worried about the cost of water going WAY up and
the increase in vermin in the Northeast. I hate shoveling snow, but I know snow is necessary for things to work the way we expect.
