What to do with Iran?

We must coordinate independent strike with US, prepare for Iranian response

Oded Tira (Brigadier General (Res.) Oded Tira is the former IDF chief artillery officer)

Israel is facing one of the most critical periods in its history in security and strategic terms. The stock market is booming, yet this isn't the first time where we encounter irrational euphoria. At the same time, by acting soberly and with determination we'll be able to handle the challenge we're facing. In order to undertake a comprehensive security assessment we must take the situation in the various theaters into account.

In Lebanon , Security Council Resolution 1701 is not being implemented. Hizbullah continues to operate south of the Litani, restores the "nature reserves" that were damaged in the war, and establishes new "nature reserves." A "nature reserve" is a compound of hidden fortifications within a wadi that dominates access roads to the "reserve" and contains bunkers, arms and supplies warehouses, residences, and firing positions, including some used to launch Katyusha rockets. Such reserve is a huge compound that allows forces to be there for a long time.

President Bush lacks the political power to attack Iran. As an American strike in Iran is essential for our existence, we must help him pave the way by lobbying the Democratic Party (which is conducting itself foolishly) and US newspaper editors. We need to do this in order to turn the Iranian issue to a bipartisan one and unrelated to the Iraq failure.

We must turn to Hillary Clinton and other potential presidential candidates in the Democratic Party so that they publicly support immediate action by Bush against Iran. We should also approach European countries so that they support American actions in Iran, so that Bush will not be isolated in the international arena again.
_____________________________________

Some notes:
Iran is not likely to get any nuclear weapons within the next five years. Attacking Iran will begin a debacle many times worse than what we have done in Iraq (and we are not sure even that we will survive the "fallout" from that) In anticipation that some will respond by saying "if israel wants to do this, let them do it, but leave the US out of it" my response will be that i find this just as nuts as those who urge a military attack on Iran by the US. No nation will be unaffected by an attack on Iran, it will be the beginning of a terrible nightmare. It will begin a chain of events no one will be able to control.

Lastly: For those of us who demand a future without this war, Who do we turn to?
the response is that we need is to use all the power of the world's greatest superpower. On Feb 15th, 2003 we saw that superpower start to organize, to flex its muscle, in massive protest against the pending war against Iraq. In Barcelona, Spain, to Antarctica(!!), to Brazil, to Los Angeles to New York to Tel Aviv millions of us marched for sanity and to prevent a war. It didn't work that time, and the people of Iraq have paid a terrible price.

This time we have no choice, we have to win this, we have to prevent this attack. It is not just for the people of Iran or for the sake of the people of the Middle East, but it may not be an exaggeration to say that the future of the planet depends on all of us to prevent a war that will not end in a simple day of attacks on Iran, but will begin an endless cycle of war and mass killing beyond our worst nightmares. So we must protest and we must say no. Any politician getting in our way must be told directly that they face our wrath and will be unemployed promptly. we are sick and tired of being led on to wars that only lead to wars and a world filled with insanity. We must demand that the whole world rid itself of nuclear weapons, and that there be no favoritism. We must demand an end to military occupations... and apply international law equally... even for the US and its allies.

We are the ones who can prevent this war.

3. Everything after "Bush lacks political power to hit Iran" is absolutely...
...chilling. I agree, this has to be stopped. Iraq is, understatement, horrible but this would be...something on a much grander scale.

4. A general has a militaristic personal opinion. What a shock.
Is this why they don't let him be in charge anymore?

7. apparently it is not why his statements aren't published any more,
nor is it why his statements are refuted by anyone who still is in charge.

6. i'd have to see it to believe it.
i think the u.s. will hit iran -- not israel -- because of the consequences.

i believe both poitical parties here believe they can absorb the consequences of bombing iran.

I linked to this article in another thread few days ago. It fits nicely with this:

http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/whoiscongresslisteningto.html

Well, Israel certainly wants war! But that is Israel. Why would the US Congress, which supposedly exists to serve the will of the AMERICAN people, be obeying the will of Israel?
Well, maybe because Israel's lobbying/spying organization, AIPAC, is PAYING THEM TO!

You heard me. Members of AIPAC, the organization suspected of spying for Israel, donate vast sums of money to the members of US Congress. And the US Congress has sold our young men and women in uniform to go off and fight and die in wars Israel has created.

So, here is what you need to do. You need to call all of your congressional representatives and tell them they can either work for AIPAC, or they can work for you, but you will not tolerate a Congress that accepts money from suspected spies of a foreign government and then quite obviously proceeds to serve the will of that government. Tell them that not only will you never again vote for any Congressman that accepts money from Israeli agents but that you intend to work for and support their opposition next election. Tell them better no government at all than a government that serves a foreign power.

Get angry.

Who is Congress listening to? It is time to make certain Congress listens to you!

Thank you for starting this thread.

11. Locking.
The title line here is a little misleading in context of the cited article.

That said, this discussion is more appropriate for the Israel/Palestine forum. There are other current threads on this topic being discussed there.

Thanks.
