1. How very sad for our country
This administration does NOT represent the will, the thoughts, and the morals of the American people.

2. Kindof ironic is this paragraph.

"“We said, ‘You have to do it by international law, you have to do it in accordance with international standards of decorum, you have to establish yourselves as a nation under law,’ ” an American official recounted. When Mr. Maliki said the Americans should respect Iraq’s right to decide matters for itself, American officials said, one of the Americans said: “Forget about us. You’re in front of the international community here. People will be watching this.”"

4. That message is tragic
In that it applies ironically to the invasion itself, and the negative light it has shown on the US/Bush.

I mean, what the hell, the US Military commanders were upset in handing over Saddam, when HE was the reason this whole sorry afair was undertaken for! It boggles the mind!

5. "Forget about us."
IOW, those "international standards of decorum" the American official referred to aren't the ones set by the US on how to treat detainees.

What a shame Maliki didn't listen.

6. You know, just like we do.
We said, ‘You have to do it by international law, you have to do it in accordance with international standards of decorum, you have to establish yourselves as a nation under law,’ ” an American official recounted.

7. You have to do it by international law

Someone should have told that to Bush when he led to the world and invaded Iraq. Chirac knew that.

3. less concern for justice than revenge
"Aides said American commanders were deeply upset by the way they were forced to hand Mr. Hussein over, a sequence commanders saw as motivated less by a concern for justice than for revenge."

That's the real truth of this hanging. When you take away all the rationalizations and decorum, the death penalty is just uncivilized ugly business. It's no different here than there. That was a clue as to what we were electing in Bush too. I just don't think you can preside over the taking of 100 human lives and not have it fuck up your head, unless you're head was fucked up to start with.

8. Revenge is the reason we're in Iraq at this very moment.
"He tried to kill my Daddy". Bush had it out for Saddam from the very beginning. He wanted revenge. Add to that the fact that Saddam, their own creation, had cut the strings from his puppet masters and struck out on his own, well......our government doesn't take kindly to people that wander off the course dictated by them. We created this monster and we had no more use for him, he'd outlived his intended purpose and became a thorn in America's side. And, as usual, they had to take him out. This type of American "diplomacy" has been repeated many times in the course of history.

Our government is so full of hypocrisy it boggles the mind. "They hate us for our freedoms". No, Mr. Bush, they hate us because we're the most meddlesome, hypocritical, selfish and dishonest country on the planet. Our "freedoms" (disappearing at a pace even faster than the Antarctic ice-shelf) have nothing to do with it. We use and discard people and countries at an alarming pace and it does not go unnoticed by others in the world. THAT, Mr. Bush, is the reason they hate us.
