There is a very insidious anti- pot commercial using leeches
wafting over the airwaves. It at first seems to be about smoking pot along the lines of if "your friends try to persuade you to jump off a cliff, ect." but upon the practice of using leeches to bleed oneself as a new fad to get "cool". But then at the end of the commercial it shows a leech being wrapped in a cigarette paper (zigzag), so this makes it a very thinly veiled admonishment of Medical Marjuana at the same time. I think that stinks! For Shame!

1. I've never been able to get leeches to stay lit when I roll 'em
Edited on Sun Jan-07-07 10:17 PM by Atman
Besides, they're harsh. An ice-water filled bong is best for leeches. And, if you roll a leech, what do you call the little bit left over at the end? A leech roach? Too confusing. Now, rolling up a fatty full of cicadas...hella buzz, man!

.

3. Wha??
I read your post quite a few times to try and wrap my mind around that message.

And I still don't get it. Leaches? "fads"?

Do they actually mention pot in the copy?

16. More...
FDA approves use of leeches and maggots:

They are also used to treat some chronic conditions involving blood coagulation.

So yes pot has medicinal uses for some as many states have already recognized, it also makes for great recreation unlike leeches.

8. It is a commercial which parallels leech use with smoking pot.
It is real & it is horribly done, which makes the creative side of me
incensed. It shows a bunch of teens talking about using leeches & fondling leeches & discussing the signs of leech use with a video of someone seeing a girl in their class with a leech attached to the back of her leg then it ends with a video of a leech being rolled up in a cigarette paper, so this is too stupid to even BE a dream, it can only be the work of the minions of our Dear Federal Government!

9. You realize of course...
that whatever their intent, these commercials promote drug use.

Hey kids! Here's how you roll a joint! See, it's green and it goes into this paper... (they actually show a joint rolling itself up at the end of this commercial.) This stuff is very very bad. It's available at school, from some of your friends. It gets you high. Really high. Your mom absolutely doesn't want you to do it. Neither does President Bush.

10. the only drug that people commonly start using merely to "look cool"...
... is tobacco. The popularity of every other drug I can think of is due to an inherent psychoactive reward upon first-time use. But of course, the people who comprise the target audience for this ad already know this.

People don't use pot recreationally merely to fit in; they use pot because they like the righteous buzz it gives. And with all the billions of taxpayer dollars that we've been forced to flush down the insatiable Drug War toilet, you'd think the makers of this ad would have hesitated before invoking leeches and all they symbolize.

12. The righteous buzz is one thing, to me it is the veiled slam
of the very real benefits of Medical Marijuana use and the strides forward of its acceptance in many states by making a gross-out film of teens using leeches & the association of ancient medical practice. It is propoganda at its worst.

14. Exactly.
The difference between leeches and pot is... pot is fun. That's why kids drink or do drugs--the same reason adults do it. It's fun.
