Newsflash: Bush reads the polls

Poll: "Majority of people want way out of Iraq."
Bush: "Better increase numbers of troops in Iraq."

Poll: "Majority of people don't want privatized Social Security."
Bush: "Privatize the Social Security."

Poll: "Fire Donald Rumsfeld."
Bush: "He's staying, I'm the Decider."

Looking at the polls and then doing the exact opposite of what they say is still reading the polls.

1. About Social Security:

As you may recall, the public was largely undecided on Social Security at first. He believed that with his reelection, he had the momentum ("political capital") to change the very nature of our entitlement programs. However, the public didn't bite. Responding to those polls, he went on a campaigning tour, trying to get the public aboard. However, the more he pushed it, the less interested the people were. Eventually, seeing that the polls weren't on his side, he gave up.

I don't mean to simply rain on your clever post. But when people say "Bush doesn't read the polls," it might be nice to remember his reaction to the Social Security fight.

2. Seven year olds do that

And certain personality disorders. Tell them what NOT to do, it makes them want to do it even more. Maybe it's time we start calling for a million-man march on Baghdad...Bush will pull out faster than a Catholic school boy on prom night.
