Poll: Americans want Democrats, not Bush, at helm
Posted 1/8/2007 3:20 PM ET

By Susan Page, USA TODAY

WASHINGTON — Democrats have taken control of Congress this month amid a wave of good feeling from a public that places one issue at the top of their to-do list: Iraq.

A USA TODAY/Gallup Poll taken Friday through Sunday shows that Americans by 2-to-1 — 63% to 32% — want congressional Democrats, not President Bush, to have more influence over the direction the nation takes in 2007 .

Half or more of those surveyed identify four issues as "extremely important" for the White House and Congress to deal with this year: The situation in Iraq, terrorism, corruption in government and health care.

snip...
At least for the moment, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of California can bask in a 2-to-1 favorable rating: 44% say they have a favorable impression of her, 22% an unfavorable one. That beats a net negative rating for Bush, viewed favorably by 45%, unfavorably by 53%.

1. That Can't Be True
Bush says the country elected Dems because they didn't like all the earmarks. It had nothing to do w/ him or Iraq so he can still do whatever he damn well pleases because they didn't reject him or his policies.

3. Bush with 45% favorable?
Wow, if the rest of the poll is that far off, the Dems must be running 80-20 actual. But never fear. They will find a way to blow it, most likely by second-guessing themselves on the war.

6. Favorable/Unfavorable is Different Than Approve/Dissaprove
They usually ask both. They don't have the Approve/Dissaprove numbers in the article, but I suspect they are lower than 45%. The difference is Favorable/Unfavorable (opinion)is more of a personal question about the person while Approve/Dissaprove is specifically about the job he's doing. The Favorable/Unfavorable is usually higher than the Approve/Dissaprove which might explain why Gallup is starting to push those numbers now.

according to rasmussen, * had a little new year bounce, but it is falling again. I'm not sure what is going on with the usa today poll. 45% see him as favorable, but only 32% want him at the helm.

10. and if all the truth was known the numbers would be much closer to3 to 1
If people only knew the truth about the Iraq war and the bush* administration, they neither would be an issue today

12. Corruption in government
Could this be the issue that opens the door to impeachment of Smirk and Snarly?

13. Pretty close to the % of victory Kerry actually enjoyed in the 04 election.
Of course the results as reported by the voting machines bear little resemblance to the actual voting results.

At present there is no reason whatever to have the slightest confidence in the results of any election in the US. That includes the 06 results, which I personally believe would have been far more lopsided if paper ballots hand counted had been the vote counting technique of choice. But there's no way to know one way or the other with certainty since there's either no way to verify or there are no laws to make use of or to force an actual audit or recount using the paper ballots, when such are available.
