If they do it, it will be a disaster. But what the hell? The whole war is a disaster. Bush has made a career of creating or intensifying disasters.

If they do it--and they may, because I'm not at all sure Congress or anyone else has the power to stop them, a lot of people will die who didn't have to die. The country will sink further--into debt, and in reputation. The Bush gang will sail blithely along. They will not be impeached. A Democrat will be elected in 2008. He or she will be unable to put everything back together, and will be blamed for that, and will be a one-termer, to be replaced by Giuliani in 2012.

Shock & Awe didn't work

Neither did the killing of various key individuals.

The house to house battle for Fallujah failed to usher in the tipping point.

Considering that we are hearing calls for a two year minimum time span for the surge to work its magic, my guess is that the whole affair will be handed over to a Democratic administration and the various members of Bushco will attempt to live out the remainder of the their lives avoiding being hauled before Congress or a court of law.
