Family Values of Focus on the Family - They fired employee whose daughter was murdered
Edited on Mon Jan-08-07 07:33 PM by ck4829
In a rather stark example of a clash between Focus On The Family's professed concern for "family values" and the organization's actual treatment of an employee working in the FOF mailroom, the Colorado Springs Independant reports on Focus On The Family's Firing Of An Employee Whose Daughter Had Recently Been Raped And Murdered

Less than a year after the man who murdered her daughter was sent to prison, on Feb. 16, 2000, Focus on the Family fired Roever, citing poor performance.

She had worked there nine years. She says that at the time she was let go, she was processing 28,000 pieces of mail a day at the ministry, a multimedia powerhouse that generates so much mail it has its own ZIP code.

Roever says that she remembers telling her supervisors, 'Guys, I'm going through something here,' but they were telling me I was screwing up.

"They acted like they were doing me a favor," she says of her firing. She received no severance pay, and no unemployment insurance.

2. So not shocked over here.
Went to a Nazarene college ("Dr." Dobson's Nazarene). They are the first to toss someone out on her butt if she's not working harder than anyone else possibly could. Sometimes they show mercy, but most of the time, they don't.

9. Not in my state.
You're only denied unemployment for actual misconduct here. Mere "incompetence" isn't enough to deny a fired worker unemployment.

29. Not in my state either. You're denied unemployment if you quit
your job. You may collect if you are fired or laid off. This is in Georgia and it was the same in Florida when I lived there.

31. depends on the circumstances
in DC, for instance, the employer can register an objection to your claiming unemployment if you are terminated for cause.

8. You can be fired and receive unemployment

I don't know if rules are different from state to state but in 2 states in which I have lived one can be fired and receive unemployment. You have to apply.

15. they do differ from state to state
But I believe even in states where you can draw, like in Illinois, the ex-employer can deny the benefits. You then have to fight the denial. If you are lucky, sometimes the state will fight it for you. I know because I was given the quit or you will be fired option, with them refusing to give a reason. When I applied for unemployment, the state employees told me that if the agency gave me any problems they would fight it for me. I guess it helped that I was not the first person done that way by this agency, and that the people in that area hated them.

17. I can't get unemployment either...
In November, I was "let go" after working for a company 9+ years. I was considered an independent contractor, so I am left with no options. I am sitting here with a skill for a specific job, where no one is hiring right now.

I wonder how many of us fall within this category, since we are not included in any of the unemployed rolls.

I hope that woman learned her lesson. Jesus demands nothing less than perfection.

"Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!

Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.

And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire."

Matthew 18:7-9

5. new version of christianity. Do unto others before they do it to you.
These guys should fall in popularity soon. I remember when I was in Colo Springs they were saying that the world would end in less than 5 years. That was 20 years ago now.

16. My father (a baptist minister) use to say
When someone says the end of the world will end tomorrow, you know you are safe for at least two more days because the bible says that no one knows when the end of the world will come. Let them keep forecasting it, because if they are right and everything in the bible is true then we can breathe easy. Of course, that sentence is incorrect because they don't believe everything in the bible or they wouldn't be doing the "do unto others before they do it to you" thing.

6. She probably wasn't agreeing with their analysis of the situation...
Edited on Mon Jan-08-07 07:39 PM by Ilsa
that God was trying to make her stronger or doesn't give her more than she can bear; (I hate that one)

or maybe she didn't agree with a subtle blame that she must have been a terrible mom to have her daughter die such a gruesome death along with rape;

maybe these people don't want to be reminded that folks are suffering out there, and this mom's suffering was too much the THEM to bear. Yeah, I bet that's why. I don't buy into their mailroom workload excuse for firing her.

12. The christian version of an honor killing.
She let her daughter get defiled so she must be punished. Losing your job (and eventually your home, ability to eat, health care, etc) is a legal way to make sure she dies.

18. According to this new (neo Calvinism) thinking Christian
If you are where you should be, you will be successful in life. If you fail it is because you are not as close to god as you should be.

I miss the old days, when the wealthy had heaven here on earth because they would not know it in the after life. And the righteous poor would gain all the riches in heaven that they never had on earth. Yeah, I know this was used to make the poor accept their poverty, but somehow these days it seems preferable. Well, anyway I don't believe either one, but if I had to chose one....

32. I am not in religion any more, so I don't know.
The last one I knew like that was my father.

The last time I was in religion, everything was very cold and organized. The ministers were educated, as in trained to say certain things a certain way. Once you have seen one, you have seen most of them. The church was more for socializing and politicizing. You went there for who you could meet and the connections you could make. It just was not for me, and I had lost interest/faith in organized religion all together by that time. Of course, I haven't really believed in organized religion since I was about eighteen, and that was forty-three years ago. My later times attending was more for my children, wanting to give them a choice of what to believe in.

It's no surprise that a group such as this would have no regard for an employee that was going through something like this.

It's not like they fired her because her daughter was murdered, it was 3 years later.

And I wouldn't have fired her, at least not without giving her a nice severance package.

Death in the family, especially that of a child, can depress a person for a very long time. Were the people at Focus on the Family taking that into consideration? Or, do they think that depression and other mental disorders are fabrications created by the Liberal Media and the Condom Cartel.

Getting her away from so many delusional and downright mean sorts of people.

That's the LAST thing a person who's been through trauma needs to be around: hypocrisy and hatred.
