That's the 3rd time I've heard about Somalia today. And the first two were RWnuts on the radio.

Seems to me they're trying to tell us that "Somalia" is some kind of warning of what happens when you quit.

All I remember is that people stopped dying when the US military pulled out.

This is a war founded on a misconception and driven by paranoid fantasies.

The misconception was the US Government’s belief that the Islamic Courts, local religious authorities backed by merchants in Mogadishu who wanted someone to curb the warlords, punish thieves, and enforce contracts, were just a cover for al-Qaida.

So the US instead backed the warlords who were making Somalis’ lives a misery.

American support is the kiss of death in Somalia, so the warlords were finally dislodged in Mogadishu last June by an uprising led by the UIC and supported by most of the population.

The warlords fled to an American ship offshore, their clansmen went to ground, and the UIC rapidly took control of most of southern Somalia, bringing order for the first time since 1991.

But the US immediately started plotting its overthrow.

Washington’s principal instrument in this enterprise was Ethiopia, Somalia’s giant neighbour to the west.

I can understand someone supporting the fight against Al Qaeda, because they are bloody terrorists who kill civilians and are capable of almost any extremist act of violence. But reveling in the deaths of others, some of whom might not even be terrorists or Al Qaeda members is just plain sick. War and the killing it involves is a terrible and sad business and not something to be glorified or raved about, even though in some cases it is necessary.

37. Thats what John Wayne's pro movie the "Green Berets" used when the VC took over

the american fire base half way through the movie, The DC 3 had a Gatling gun firing down on the fire base and it killed all the evil VC in the fire base. Then John Wayne lead his forces back into the fire base, cutting down the North Viet flag. Very dramatic and a clear message, you mess with the USA you die.

Edited to add, when Wayne called in the air strike he used the code call " Puff the magic dragon".

39. I believe it was an attack version of the cargo carrying C-47 "gooneybird"

which was essentially the military version of the civilian DC-3 passenger plane. I flew in a DC-3 from Richmond, Virginia to Savannah, Georgia in the late 1960s when Delta Airlines was still using them in the South. It was really a weird trip and it seemed like the thing was just barely flying above the tree tops. My Dad who was career Air Force flew C-47s for quite a few years. They were beautiful-looking planes to me.

military aircraft, if it looks like a duck it must be a duck so lets call it a duck type thinking. Btw, if memory serves me correctly, the C-47 used in the movie was silver and I don't remember any military markings on it, which struck me as odd when I saw the movie, dad is a John Wayne fan so all JW movies were seen when I lived at home.
