My boss promised me a $100 bonus and a turkey
for Christmas. So far I've seen neither. He told our newest worker that he would give him a raise as of the first of the year--and today told me not to give it to him when I do payroll. I'm nearly 56, with few chances at other jobs around here-but the new worker is 21, and I think he will quit. My question is, can you quit and get unemployment if you were promised a raise and then no given it? Boss didn't give a reason for not doing it except that he "thinks" the new worker will quit because he's moved to a nearby town well within commuting distance.

1. No. Unfortunately, if it wasn't in writing then the boss
can change his mind at any time.

2. Probably Not
unless he's got proof on paper of this promised raise, but even then, I don't think so.

4. "Can I have that in writing?"
is what everybody who works for that guy needs to ask. He's the kind of jerk who wants the gratitude but will never provide anything to gain it.

3. I'd say the 21 year old needs to fight his own battles
You, however, should follow up on your bonus. Don't worry about the turkey.

6. Just ask him when you will be getting the turkey certificate and the $100

At least then he will know that you did not "forget".. and tell the other employee to "take it up with the boss"..

That's always the sucky thing about bonuses.. Bosses can (and probably a lot do) go back on their word..

8. Regarding unemployment ....
Your young co-worker might benefit from you suggesting that he find another job, before he quits. That makes the issue of unemployment -- which he would not get -- a non-issue. Young folks would do well to understand that sometimes a job is like a flat tire -- you need to change it. But you make that change on your own terms. Have another job lined up.

My guess is that if you give him this advice, it will be of more value than any "bonus" your employer could give.
