1. How do you know they're in Singapore?
Edited on Tue Jan-09-07 04:37 PM by htuttle
Is that where the first link in the transfer chain starts? Or is that where investigators have followed it to?

5. Hmm...just wondering how easy it's getting to do now days
Edited on Tue Jan-09-07 04:43 PM by htuttle
For example, if it's organized crime of some kind doing it (indicated by the money being transferred through several accounts), that might mean it's still not very easy. But if it's someone sending money directly to themselves, that might mean that the bank-hacker equivalent of a 'script kiddy' can now do this. That would be very, very bad.

I know it's gotten all-too-easy for someone to create fraudulent credit card transactions, but I thought it was harder for someone to access bank accounts directly. Maybe not.

2. Have you taken the necessary steps through your bank?
How awful. I sometimes think I might bury my money in a can in the back yard.

7. A while back, I had received a phone call from my bank.
They mentioned a suspicious transaction (ATM?) in England. I told them that it must be false, so they immediately halted it and got me started on a new bank card. Since then, I check my bank transactions daily by internet. As far as I know, as long as you exercise "due diligence", the bank bears the major responsibility here. And NO, I'm a (Chomsky) socialist, and don't always side with the banks.

10. Had that happen one time myself, then found out that it was
actually someone inside the bank working the accounts over. Found out when they sent us a new card and it had already been activated and had some activity on it.

12. We had that, too.
People were cashing checks from my grandfather's office using my name. Turned out to be an inside job within the bank.

11. "Attack of the Zombie Computers Is Growing Threat"
This article about "botnets" has been on the NYTimes most emailed list for several weeks. It's currently down to No. 14. Go to www.nytimes.com and then to most emailed list to read the whole thing. The article estimates that currently eleven percent of computers are infected.

In their persistent quest to breach the Internet’s defenses, the bad guys are honing their weapons and increasing their firepower.

(Tips for Protecting the Home Computer)

With growing sophistication, they are taking advantage of programs that secretly install themselves on thousands or even millions of personal computers, band these computers together into an unwitting army of zombies, and use the collective power of the dragooned network to commit Internet crimes.

These systems, called botnets, are being blamed for the huge spike in spam that bedeviled the Internet in recent months, as well as fraud and data theft. Security researchers have been concerned about botnets for some time because they automate and amplify the effects of viruses and other malicious programs.

What is new is the vastly escalating scale of the problem — and the precision with which some of the programs can scan computers for specific information, like corporate and personal data, to drain money from online bank accounts and stock brokerages.

“It’s the perfect crime, both low-risk and high-profit,” said Gadi Evron, a computer security researcher for an Israeli-based firm, Beyond Security, who coordinates an international volunteer effort to fight botnets. “The war to make the Internet safe was lost long

13. Holy shit!
I hope they are caught! Two kinds of people I hold a special hatred for - people who write viruses and people who commit identity theft!

If I EVER catch a motherfucker writing a virus...well...it won't be pretty.
