No more need for carring a wallet

Pretty cool

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070109/bs_nm/electronics_show_visa_dc_3

Visa, the world's biggest credit card payment system, has launched a global system to turn mobile phones into wallets for millions of customers in a deal with the world's top handset producer, Nokia.

Users can pay for groceries and other purchases by swiping a phone over a reader that electronically communicates with a microchip on the phone. Phone owners confirm the purchase with the push of a button and the deal is complete.

The platform is the result of many years of trials around the world and will enable mobile contactless payments, remote payments, person-to-person payments, and mobile coupons.

11. The article doesn't mention security.
There has to be some way to confirm that the person using the phone is the phone's actual owner. Personally, I'd prefer having a chip embedded in my thumb. At least I know I'm not going to leave my thumb on the bus.

pretty soon, we'll have all our id, money, secret-naughty-info on one chip the size of a penny, which when inevitably lost will result in our lives being fucked over by crooks, ten times worse than theft (identity and otherwise) already is.

32. I have a huge problem with the security of the transactions in this device...
What is transmitted, what's the range of the transmission, and what type of encryption is used? The article is scant on those details, though it says this is a NFC chip, which are slightly secure, however, they mentioned that they plan to use this technology for "remote payment" which makes me assume this chip is integrated with the rest of the phone, including its transmission abilities. In this case, cloning the phone may also clone your pertinent payment information, enough for someone to steal your identity. In addition to this, there is apparently no authentication, as the article mentions a single button push to confirm a transaction took place at the cash register. With no pin, no signature, what's to prevent someone from simply swiping your phone and hitting the max on your credit?

33. You don't have to enter a pin or sign anything for most transactions

now. You never have to enter a PIN if your debit card has a Visa or Master card logo, they only want you to do that so your bank pays the processing fees instead of them. Most credit purchases don't require a signature.

The only time that there is no authentication is for Internet transactions, which I avoid like the plague anyways.

35. click "credit" and you don't have to enter your pin

They all want you to enter it to save them the processing fee, you hit "cancel" and then "credit", most places have a certain amount that you have to sign if it's over. Under that amount no signature.

36. What places require no signature?
Most places I've been too either have a minimum transaction amount for credit card purchases, usually 5 bucks, that still require a signature, or you still sign the receipt even if the amount is less than a buck.

Also, at least with a credit/debit card, nothing is transmitted though the air, even if extremely short range. So someone could be sitting outside the store, in a car, with a sensitive receiver, and obtain all the information they need from these transactions. With no outside authentication, like a PIN that isn't transmitted, theft could be even easier than it is now.

especially the "minimum" transaction thing. Sinclair, BP(Amoco), CFM/Shell, and Citgo, are the most popular around here.

40. You're absolutely right. Those things will have to be figured out.
If they're not, I sure as shit won't use one.

Although, to be fair, every time you hand your credit card to a waiter in a restaurant someone can steal the payment information off that, too.

stolen?? :scared: I have had TWO cell phones that were stolen (not lost) I can imagine what hell I would have had if the phones were also credit cards. :eyes: NO thanks! x(

EDIT: I wanted to add that I have also found at least THREE cell phones lost by other people so stolen and lost phones are a real possibly and very likely to happen.

25. Bad, bad bad idea.
I PT at a movie theater - any idea how many phones we find in the theater every single day? And that's just at one multiplex.

People lose phones by the tens of thousands every day, it seems. Not exactly a high security situation. That's a lot of personal information in a very vulnerable, easily hacked place.

NEVER catch me doing that.

29. I often prefer cash
I am not sure I want everything bundled together like that. Some of my gigs pay in cash, and I don't really need an electronic record of them (has to do with Hubby's Medicaid). It also sounds like a individual security problem, unless there are provisions for PINs or other passwording.

I still don't understand why the US doesn't have stored-value cards such as are found in Europe. They are so simple to use and recharge. I saved my Belgian Telephone card to show folks here. It has a chip embedded in it which retains the value information.
