I have driven down the NJ Turnpike through Newark many times and I can attest to the fact that it stinks SO BAD. It's like Bush had just been there, you can still smell the sulfer.

New Yorkers discover stink came from neighbour's swamp

New York- One day after a foul smell of rotten eggs caused widespread panic and talks of a terrorist attack in New York City, authorities said a swamp in New Jersey emitted the stinky odour, news reports said Tuesday. "That's where our noses and instruments tell us the smell originated," said Charles Sturcken, a spokesman for Department of Environmental Protection.

i used to ride the Domenico bus from Staten Island to the city, which went through Bayonne on its way to the Holland Tunnel.

grossest smells i ever smelled. i believe there was even a slaughterhouse in the mix.

and the grime and carbon monoxide in the tunnel... i used to get home from work and take off my makeup, and in addition to the pinky-orange tones one would expect, there was quite a bit of grey in there too.
