Sen. Kennedy seeks universal health plan

WASHINGTON - The federal government should join his home state of Massachusetts in enacting universal health coverage, says Sen. Edward Kennedy (news, bio, voting record), the new chairman of the Senate committee with jurisdiction over numerous health issues.

Massachusetts is the first state to require everyone to have health insurance, just as drivers must have automobile coverage.

Kennedy has his own version of what universal health coverage would look like. He wants to extend Medicare to all. But, in prepared remarks for a hearing scheduled Wednesday, he signaled an intent to consider programs being tried in the states.

Im dont like how Mass went about it, but I like the idea of extending Medicare for all, provided we get our financial house in order by ending needless wars.

on access to health care judging who is worthy is morally disgusting and i will not support it. i will actively share the "slippery slope that doesnt exist" loud and clear. this board has convinced me not to support a govt health care. they couldnt do it in ethical manner. agenda had to rule. i wont support.

Universal implies that ALL are entitled to it. I do not know if Europe has such restrictions but I doubt it. Europe also allows for more preventive measures that our current private insurance system looks down on and that keeps their costs down.

I avoided the smoking threads and obesity threads because quite frankly they are very stupid.

Im sorry you are turning your back on a system that the rest of the civilized world has proven to be quite successful.

11. well... blair is trying to get thru restriction, adn there was recently an article

on australia. and since u.s. seems to be passing absurd smoking laws thru out the nation not to mention a lot of other non thinking nanny laws, i doo not trust our nation with something as big as peoples healthcare. instead of dimissing my concern, i would hope others would stridently support my belief that we are all insured as universal implies. that includes the alcoholic, the druggey, the smoker, the person that geneticaly has poor health and the person that may create the poor health thru life behaviors.

As I have said I support Universal Healthcare. I wasnt even aware of restrictions until you posted. I am not aware that said restrictions are part of Senator Kennedys proposal.

A share the high misgiving that national health care will exacerbate the Nanny State oppression beyond all tolerance. The intellectually dishonest hyperbole is even more extreme than the Cheney/Bush/Rice/Powell hyperbole 'justifying' the Iraq invasion and occupation. It's amazing that supposedly 'intelligent' people can wallow in such extremism and be blissfully unaware of the deceits.

10. Kennedy is a smart old dude who sees

that for profit insurance companies are the problem and can never be part of the solution. Of course, the conservatives in both parties will howl nonstop about creeping socialism.

Maybe this will finally convince the American public that socialism isn't a cuss word and a little more of it in their lives might be a good thing.
