GREAT news! "Sen. Johnson Upgraded to Fair Condition"
Sen. Johnson Upgraded to Fair Condition
By MARY CLARE JALONICK, Associated Press Writer

In this Aug. 26, 2005, file photo, Sen. Tim ...
WASHINGTON - Sen. Tim Johnson's condition has been upgraded from critical to fair, four weeks after he was hospitalized for a brain hemorrhage, and he no longer needs a ventilator to help him breathe.

Johnson is breathing independently after using a ventilator for several weeks, most recently only at night, his doctor, Vivek Deshmukh, said Tuesday.

The South Dakota Democrat, who underwent emergency surgery on Dec. 13, remains in intensive care at George Washington University Hospital, said his spokeswoman, Julianne Fisher.

"The senator continues to make progress," Fisher said. "The next step would be rehabilitation, and we hope that would happen within the week."<snip>

3. From what I've read, the AVM was in the left temporal lobe
and that's where the speech centers are.

He will need speech therapy over a very long time. I've seen speech therapists work wonders, so there is hope that he will recover to reassume his job. At any rate, there is no reason for him to retire over the next 2 years, rapid recovery or not.

The news yesterday said he'd been moved out of intensive care. The only reason for him to still be in an ICU is for improved security.
