'Munsters' Star Yvonne De Carlo Dies
'Munsters' Star Yvonne De Carlo Dies
Actress Was On Sitcom From 1964-1966

POSTED: 2:36 pm EST January 10, 2007
UPDATED: 3:22 pm EST January 10, 2007

Yvonne De Carlo, the film and television actress best known for her vampire character Lily Munster on the classic 1960s sitcom "The Munsters," has died.

She was 84.

De Carlo died of natural causes Monday at the Motion Picture and Television facility near Los Angeles, said longtime friend and television producer Kevin Burns said Wednesday.

"The Munsters" lasted from 1964-1966, but it had a long life in syndication and resulted in two feature movies, "Munster Go Home!" (1966) and "The Munsters' Revenge" (1981, for television). She'll forever be Herman Munster's (Fred Gwynne) beloved wife, who stood by the bumbling Frankenstein's monster through all his misadventures.

"I think she will best remembered as the definitive Lily Munster," Burns said. "She was the vampire mom to millions of baby boomers. In that sense, she's iconic."

1. AHHHHHHH!
:wow:

But I do have to admit I thought she was already dead, and not in the Lily Munster way.

I didn't realize that Yvonne DeCarlo was a year old than he was . . .

17. More than just stars
although many have received their last care and housing there (It's about five miles from where
I am typing this). Just about any time imdb lists someone passing away in Woodland Hills, CA,
you can bet they were receiving care at Motion Picture & Television Fund.

I live about 15 minutes north of there. A lot of the greats have passed on in that facility. I had an acquaintance that used to visit Larry Fine of The Three Stooges there.

14. it's a facility in Woodland Hills
for independent, assisted living and medical care for anyone who has worked in the Motion Picture Industry.
It's quite nice - and the elders are among others who have shared a certain amount of 'history'. It's funded by salary deductions, donations and I think, gets some funding from the unions and guilds. I've had many friends who lived and died there. Before I moved away, I used to take my dog out to visit - he was always a welcome guest.

excuse any errors here. i just had catarct surgery 2 hours ago and am working with one eye here. :)

DeCarlo performed on Broadway, notably in the role of Carlotta Campion, introducing the song "I'm Still Here" in the Stephen Sondheim musical 'Follies' (Tony, 1971, Best Musical):

song clip

Good times and bum times,
I've seen them all and, my dear,
I'm still here.
Plush velvet sometimes,
Sometimes just pretzels and beer,
But I'm here.
I've stuffed the dailies
In my shoes.
Strummed ukuleles,
Sung the blues,
Seen all my dreams disappear,
But I'm here.
I've slept in shanties,
Guest of the W.P.A.,
But I'm here.
Danced in my scanties,
Three bucks a night was the pay,
But I'm here.
I've stood on bread lines
With the best,
Watched while the headlines
Did the rest.
In the Depression was I depressed?
Nowhere near.
I met a big financier
And I'm here.
I've been through Gandhi,
Windsor and Wally's affair,
And I'm here.
Amos 'n' Andy,
Mah-jongg and platinum hair,
And I'm here.
I got through Abie's
Irish Rose,
Five Dionne babies,
Major Bowes,
Had heebie-jeebies
For Beebe's
Bathysphere.
I lived through Brenda Frazier
And I'm here.
I've gotten through Herbert and J. Edgar Hoover,
Gee, that was fun and a half.
When you've been through Herbert and J. Edgar Hoover,
Anything else is a laugh.
I've been through Reno.
I've been through Beverly Hills,
And I'm here.
Reefers and vino,
Rest cures, religion and pills,
And I'm here
Been called a pinko
Commie tool,
Got through it stinko
By my pool.
I should have gone to an acting school.
That seems clear,
Still, someone said, "She's sincere,"
So I'm here.
Black sable one day.
Next day it goes into hock,
But I'm here.
Top billing Monday,
Tuesday you're touring in stock,
But I'm here.
First you're another
Sloe-eyed vamp,
Then someone's mother,
Then you're camp.
Then you career from career
To career.
I'm almost through my memoirs.
And I'm here.
I've gotten through "Hey, lady, aren't you whoozis?
Wow! What a looker you were."
Or, better yet, "Sorry, I thought you were whoozis.
Whatever happened to her?"
Good times and bum times,
I've seen 'em all and, my dear,
I'm still here.
Flush velvet sometimes,
Sometimes just pretzels and beer,
But I'm here.
I've run the gamut.
A to Z.
Three cheers and dammit,
C'est la vie.
I got through all of last year
And I'm here.
Lord knows, at least I was there,
And I'm here!
Look who's here!
I'm still here!

20. Yvonne was a beautiful and talented actress.
If only I had been born 30 years earlier.

Yvonne and Fred Gwynne - both very good actors for such a corny show.

That silly show used to make me laugh as a kid.

She had a long career in Hollywood, aside from The Munsters.
