Pelosi: ‘Increasing the Minimum Wage Is a Victory for America’s Families’
Pelosi: ‘Increasing the Minimum Wage Is a Victory for America’s Families’

Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on H.R. 2, the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007, which passed on the floor with bipartisan support:

“After nearly a decade, 15 million hard-working families will finally receive the pay raise they have deserved for so long. The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007 will increase the federal minimum wage from $5.15 to $7.25 an hour over the next two years, providing families with additional funds to cover the increasing costs of health insurance, gasoline and home heating, and attending college. With the passage of this crucial legislation, we will reward work, paying America’s workers a decent wage so they may join in our nation’s prosperity.

“From economic security to national security, the American people have resoundingly called for a New Direction. In the first 100 legislative hours of this Congress, House Democrats will continue to work to increase prosperity, opportunity, and security for all Americans, not just the privileged few.”

Have these people tried to live on $14k per year?

It's just too bad this face is not the one the "American people" sees as the NeoCon party. We'd never lose an election if the people saw them for what they are.

18. Excuse me but
anyone who's come home from Krogers withOUT the milk packed on top the bread or the chips or the grapes knows a good bagger is worth way more than $14,500 a year. Same goes for the fast food person bagging the togo orders. If you get home without your sandwiches squished at the bottom of the bag you know that place found a skilled artist. :)

Seriously though, claiming minimum wage employees LACK SKILLS is just assinine. The only thing one can claim is that the labor pool is full of people with comparable skills and employers are unwilling to pay more than the minimum to obtain those skills.

it amazes how seldom the poor go postal in this country. Just getting a bank account that zeroes out every month requires the patience of mother theresa. Not to mention all the other crap we put them through at their jobs.

Excellent point. Thank you.

Are there toilets to be cleaned?

Streets to be cleaned?

Need I go on?

If they all quit tomorrow, what would we all do?

Suddenly, they're worth more, eh? :hi:

And, yes... you are soooo very right.... the patience it takes!

Thanks for your words of understanding!

He worked as a bagger in high school and is constantly amazed at how piss-poor the bagging jobs are done at most stores now.

Small potatoes (no pun intended) with what's going on in the world, but an excellent point, none-the-less.

Gasoline maybe, home heating probably, but health insurance and college? Hardly.

It lists all the major actions of the day and you just click on the particular link for the bill you're looking for. You want the roll calls where it tells you "On passage Passed by recorded vote: xxx-xxx"

John Duncan was also one of the few Republicans to vote against the IWR.

He's a rare breed of old-time Republican, that one.

If I can't have a Democrat in my house seat (and I can't - too many Republicans in the district as a whole), then I'm glad I have THIS Republican.

Let's keep it up, 'eh? Lots more still remaining to be dealt with. And the more of these things we accomplish, the better, because:

A) it makes the Dems look good, like people who keep their promises.

B) it further demoralizes the enemy, and the wavering ones among them are, bit by bit, rendered more likely to defect, or at the very least, to vote with us more frequently - ESPECIALLY those who see their own necks on the block in '08.

C) it adds to the MOMENTUM that we've built. It's like that rule of thumb in real estate. The three most important things here are MOMENTUM, MOMENTUM, MOMENTUM. That giant sucking sound that you will hear generated by this is the sound of more of the enemy crying "uncle" and giving up, or more of them shedding their enemy status and doing one of those "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" maneuvers. EITHER WAY, OUR SIDE WINS. Adding to the momentum only ENHANCES the PERCEPTION we NEED to enhance with the voters - that WE are the adults in charge, that WE are the people who actually get things done, and WE are the party to be trusted with the country's business. THAT is going to be CRITICAL going into '08. If it unfolds favorably for us, it is highly likely that the "great realignment" kkkarl rove envisioned and designed and worked to set up for the national political scene over the next few decades WILL come to pass - only, it'll happen for a different political party than the one he envisioned. Remember: PERCEPTION IS EVERYTHING. EVERYTHING!!!

61. Excellent! Let's knock 'em out one after another. Each one of 'em
knocked straight outta the ballpark.

I'm telling ya - EVERY score here adds to our MOMENTUM, and the PERCEPTION that WE are the happening party. WE are the ones who do the people's business. And if you run into skeptics or apologists for the wrong-wing, you might want to point out that all the 100 Hours agenda items are LIBERAL ITEMS, LIBERAL IDEAS, that the VAST VAST MAJORITY of the American people WANTS. That's why they voted US in, last November, and threw out the rubber-stamp status quo.

Put THAT in your knuckle-dragger, 13th-century-mind, GOP rubber-stamper pipe and smoke it. If YOU guys were so great and doing so well for America, YOU'D still be in charge.

"Family" was copyrighted by the Republicans in the 90s to mean "Homos are coming! Eeek!" She could be sued over this. What's next, Nancy, dropping the terms "morals" and "values?"
