Obama Opposes Bush Plan -- Wants to Go Beyond Resolution Against It

Published: January 10, 2007 10:00 PM ET

NEW YORK Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois, suddenly a leading Democratic spokesman, blasted President Bush's plan, announced tonight, to send more than 20,000 new U.S. troops to Iraq -- and said that he favored going beyond the non-binding resolution his party will put forward hitting the idea.

Obama said that with the defection of three more Republican Senators today he expects "we will get 51 votes" for that resolution. But he added that more needed to be done the Senate to constrain the new Bush plan which he said was opposed by most Americans and "experts" on the issue.

He did not say exactly what that might mean, but said Sen. Harry Reid and others were studying various measures and he did not feel their were "constitutional" reasons more serious challenges could not be tried. He said the limits might be "institutional" and the desire to make sure any funding moves would not put any troops currently in Iraq in any jeopardy.

He also revealed that he had met for a long discussion with Secretary of State Rice before the speech, where he told her that he believed this was not a partisan debate but one that all sides must join.

Obama touted the note sent by conservative Republican Sen. Sam Brownback today from Baghdad, opposing the Bush plan.

1. If the Senate can muster 9 Republicans to oppose the escalation, and Pelosi...
delivers the backing in the House (which she will), what happens then?

The constitutional crises other DUers wrote about earlier today?

6. I am very glad to hear this.
I don't know yet what I think of Obama, but I'm happy -- actually, relieved and ecstatic -- to hear that anyone whose voice might be heard in DC and the nation is looking into the constitutionality of tactics of opposition to the lunatic-in-charge.

We need to KNOW what can be done to restrain the madman at the wheel and stop him from making things much worse than they are already.

I believe *'s announcement tonight that he plans to order attacks on Iran and Syria will send many people in this country into a full-out panic in the next couple of days as they realize what he actually said. Our Reps and Senators need to be prepared for the pressure they're going to get to ACT TO STOP this insanity!

11. Awesome. I heard Susan Collins (R Maine) say she didn't support the surge, but
would wait to hear the psycho's speech. I wonder what she thinks today? She could be one more to add to the list of repubs who are against his escalation.
