Being new here at the Democratic Underground, I just want to know--Is there something going on with the ads at the very top of the screen that I don't understand?

1. Turn off the ad option.

Problem solved.

On edit: I tried to sen a PM, but you have that option turned off. So go to your "Options" icon and then click on "Preferences". Scroll to the bottom and turn off the advertising option and you won't have to look at the ads. It's google, so DU has no control.

3. Welcome to DU

In a nutshell: they are Google AdSense ads; DU does not choose the content of the ads. Rather, Google serves up ad content based on words found on this site; thus, the more we talk about Coulter and Malkin, the greater likelihood ads for them will be served to the page.

4. DU has no control over those advertisements.

The advertisements are from Google, and are displayed based upon keywords in posts and other contents of the page.

The ads are necessary, unfortunately, as each click generates money which then goes toward DU's upkeep costs.

If someone mentions Coulter or Malkin, an ad for them comes up.

7. Let DU Administration or a Mod know when if it happens again

And include the ad link as well as they can be filtered (by DU Administration). The ad information is important as they need to know which one to filter out.

10. The adds for her will go away

if we just don't talk about her. Google looks for keywords in our posts and puts up what it thinks are related adds to what we talk about. It doesn't analyze the sentence as a whole, as in it doesn't read "Ann Coulter is a shitty author who lives with the rest of the freepers in a land far far away from reality"

click on the link. Coulter/Malkin/etc. have to pay for those clicks. If enough "false" clicks are found by Google, certain advertising is pulled from the site.
