Last night, President Bush promised to deliver a new strategy for the war in Iraq. Unfortunately, despite a clear message sent by the American people at the polls last November, the President instead gave us the same old dish of stay-the-course, and, at worst, an escalation that has been cut-and-pasted from the unsuccessful Vietnam War strategy book.
Make no mistake about it, the President's "surge" proposal isn't a new strategy -- it's just tweaking the flawed tactics of a failed strategy that the American people have already clearly rejected. Escalating the use of U.S. troops in a widening civil war in Iraq would take us further in the wrong direction. It would put even more Americans in danger, it goes against the advice of key military commanders on the ground in Iraq, and it would make it more difficult to begin bringing our troops home.
Tell President Bush that the American people oppose sending any more troops to Iraq -- email the White House now!
Our armed services, including the National Guard, are already stretched to the breaking point. Beginning to bring them home would begin relieving those pressures on our force structure, as well as on our troops and their families.
That's why I'm proud to be a cosponsor of the Iraq resolution recently introduced by my friend Senator Ted Kennedy, which would bar expenditure of funds for an escalation of troop deployments without the explicit approval of the Congress. And I was proud to cosponsor last year's Kerry-Feingold Amendment, which would begin troop redeployments within six months.
The American people spoke loud and clear at the polls last November. They expect the Congress to help end our involvement in the Iraq civil war, not to yield to the White House's desperate efforts to prolong the war.
The President is simply postponing the tough decisions. What is going on here is wrong. It is immoral. And I will not support it.
Tell President Bush you don't support this approach either. Forward an email to the White House now!
Sincerely,
Patrick Leahy
U.S. Senator
P.S. I hope you'll make your voice heard on this critical issue and forward your own email to the White House. Then urge your friends and family to do the same.
