I have watched many hearings...WHAT the hell is that guy breathing into a CUP
about? The guy in the front of the room with that black rubber looking thing he keeps putting up to his mouth? I am sure not every person who does that job...what ever it is...has asthma?

1. They can speak into a tape machine or with someone else
through those things without being heard elsewhere in the chamber.

6. I used to do typing for court reporters
Some of them dictate into a computer rather than using the machine you type on. They use that black rubber thing to dictate into.

7. That would be a stenographer.
Usually you see them as typing on little machines. Some rather odd stenographers repeat everything they hear into a cone, and then type it out later. I didn't think there were any of that sort left. It seems completely obsolete thanks to, oh I don't know, video cameras.

8. Very old fashioned method of
court stenography. I'm amazed they still use it. Somebody actually has to listen to the tape and transcribe it.
