Divine Strake Hearing Draws Hundreds in Utah

Jan 11, 2007 by Julie Rose

(KCPW News) Hundreds of people turned out last night to demand answers from a group of government scientists and officials working on the proposed Divine Strake explosives test. The mood was calm but skeptical as people filed through a series of displays covering various aspects of the test. The format was intended to foster one-on-one conversation, but frustrated many attendees hoping for a formal presentation from officials.

"They've got a lot of people trying to smooth a lot of ruffled feathers," noted Jenica Fuller of Ogden. "I don't think they're smoothing very many, though."

Fuller came to ask one simple question - why is the test necessary? She says the answers she got were too vague. Others in the group questioned the government's claim radiation exposure from Divine Strake will be miniscule.

"I'm sure they're all very smart guys and they all have degrees," said downwinder Duane Carling. "But my question is 'You lied to us for over 20 years. Why should we think you're telling the truth now?'"

Nevada Test Site spokesman Darwin Morgan responds this way:

"The government agency of the 1950s does not exist today," says Nevada Test Site spokesman Darwin Morgan. "If that government agency still existed, we would have already conducted this experiment. We did not have the environmental laws in place that we do know. The protocols today start with the safety and health questions first."

Attendees at the meeting were encouraged to submit their concerns in writing.

In two weeks, Utahns will have a chance to express their concerns orally at a public hearing organized by Utah Governor Jon Huntsman Junior. The hearing in Salt Lake City will be on January 24th at 5:30 p.m. at the State Capitol.

2. Would they still want this
if we insisted that members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff were required to do the radiation monitoring in the field say, 50 miles down range, camping in tents with no safety gear?

3. Is naming an explosives test "Divine" indicative of the wrath of god?
Where in hell did the name "Divine Strake" come from and what in hell does it mean? Strake as a combination of strafe and strike?

Divine: Having the nature of or being a deity. Of, relating to, emanating from, or being the expression of a deity: sought divine guidance through meditation. Being in the service or worship of a deity; sacred. Superhuman; godlike. Supremely good or beautiful; magnificent: a divine performance of the concerto. Extremely pleasant; delightful: had a divine time at the ball. Heavenly; perfect.

Strake: A device for controlling air flow over an aircraft. A strake is also a part of a boat or ship used for generally the same purpose in water rather than air. It is a strip of planking in a wooden vessel or of plating in a metal one, running longitudinally along the vessel's side, its bottom or between them on the turn of the bilge.

more:

DIVINE STRAKE is one of several "DIVINE" efforts under the Hard and Deeply Buried Target Defeat (HDBTD) program. DIVINE WARHAWK consists of deep underground operational tunnel facility defeat demonstrations using advanced weapons at the White Sands Missile Range. DIVINE HELCAT was a 2004 reconstitution exercise to determine reconstitution time for the C3I tunnel facility at Nevada Test Site (NTS). Also in 2004 planning began for DIVINE HATES, which is a WMD production and storage tunnel complex functional defeat effort.

5. There are many definitions out there for the Divine Strake.
I believe it is a prelude to an attack on Iran's undeground nuclear program. Yes, it is very scary!!!

Downwinders are still getting cancers from the 50's tests winds which reached as far as the East Coast and Canada. It may take years for the cancer to show up in the human body. This is something that should concern all of us in this country.

10. Any bomb 'test' with the title of 'Divine' should automatically get cancelled.
There is nothing "Divine" about blowing up bombs - just ask the US soldiers who are victims of IEDs over in Iraq, much less a bomb designed to simulate a nuclear bomb.

Fuck. That.
