Iraq Escalation Smoke Screen For Iran Attack
Edited on Thu Jan-11-07 03:05 PM by Homer12
I seriously think that this troop build up is just a smoke screen and bait and switch to get forces ready to launch an attack against Iran? All the pieces are coming into place with the Aircraft carrier battle groups, a troop build-up, the act of war attacking the Iranian consulate in Kurdish territory, and the appoitment of an admiral as commander to ground forces in the region.

If Iran takes the bait, the war widens.

4. quite frankly
I'd like to see Congress get out ahead of this and specify that any military action outside of Afghanistan or Iraq requires a separate congressional authority for war. I have no idea how it would go in legaleze but it needs to be done yesterday.

2. I have more faith in the Iranians
Not to take the bait than I do with our government to actually do the right thing.

Lets just hope they show the restraint we need them to show, so that the Bush admin can be exposed further to the world for what he is.

And while I'm not a flag burner, that would be the first moment in my life where I would find the practice to be respectable.

7. to invade ?
they don't have even close to the capability for a ground invasion. not a chance. but an air campaign has been in the works for a couple years now. i'd thought they were gonna use the lebanon 'war' as an 'in' but syria wouldn't play so they had to delay.

9. So you're saying the troops to be used for the "surge" will be used in Iran?
I don't doubt it. That would be a very clean way to get the ball rolling.

11. They might be there
for other defensive postures. They likely will never be used in the insane manner Bush has presented, just protect the oil assets and Green Zone. Also they put more Americans in harms way for a president to "protect" with extreme measures since effectively all the withdrawal bridges have been burned in advance.

Bush cannot disguise the fact that he has shifted his interest to the Naval tools necessary for Iran. Whatever he said about the surge as a strategy to win in Iraq is a palpable lie whether his is crazy enough to entertain that as a possible result or not. Primarily they are using it and smaller, more meaningful moves to go ahead monstrously against Iran. Too many pols and stupefied press people are playing idiotically into the overt claims which enable this as a possible ruse to succeed.

BTW if Bush intends to spite the world by NOT securing Iranian oil fields that is the kind of easy tragedy that must appeal to him right now, making our command of Iraq even more "vital". They have abandonned any attempt to get others on board to prevent such a catastrophe. Some token land action by the Marines is possible in some scenarios.

It all depends on what kind of nuts you think squat in our halls of ultimate power.
