Forum makes case for Bush impeachment

After President Bush made his case for troop escalation in Iraq in Wednesday's national address, impeachment advocates made a case for removing him from office for allegedly violating the Constitution and lying to the public.

Impeachment isn't "radical at all. It's been around for over 200 years," said Elizabeth de la Vega, a former federal prosecutor whose book, "United States v. Bush, et al" lays out a criminal indictment of the Bush administration. Impeachment is a "quaint notion that there should be checks and balances," she said.

Panelist Phil Burk, creator of the Web site ImpeachBush.tv, said impeachment is a "remedy for the abuses of power."

The same four panelists will appear at a public forum sponsored by the Santa Rosa Democratic Club on Jan. 24 at the Santa Rosa Veterans Memorial Building.

A largely gray-haired and sympathetic audience of about 250 attended the forum at Healdsburg High School.

Almost all of them raised their hands when one panelist asked if Bush should be removed from office.

Impeachment isn't "radical at all. It's been around for over 200 years," said Elizabeth de la Vega, a former federal prosecutor whose book, "United States v. Bush, et al" lays out a criminal indictment of the Bush administration. Impeachment is a "quaint notion that there should be checks and balances," she said.

De la Vega said her book was "my way of making a 911 call. I hope people start to listen."

Panelist Phil Burk, creator of the Web site ImpeachBush.tv, said impeachment is a "remedy for the abuses of power."

Bush has "broken the Constitution," Burk said, by undermining Congress' "ability to legislate" and violating the Fourth Amendment protection against unlawful search and seizure.
