When someone on DU accuses a conservative of being gay, it's not to insult them because they're gay, it's to call them out on their hypocrisy against gays.

If one was gay and was out of the closet or even in the closet but did not make it his life goal to deny gays their basic rights, then it would be pointless to call them gay as an insult.

But when one spends their life criticizing gays, as that recent preacher did in Colorado, then is outed as a gay person, then it becomes amusing to call them gay because we all know it is their worst nightmare.

In other words, those who insult republicans by calling them gay don't do it because they are prejudice against gays, they do it because they know it really bothers the conservatives.

But now you're discussing semantics. When one is discussing someone's immigration status, calling them an "alien" is considered more offensive than calling them an "immigrant". But whatever you call them, it is clear they were born in another country.

Like when discussing someone's sexual preference, wouldn't the word "faggot" be more offensive than "gay"? But no matter what you call them, it is clear they are homosexual.

In fact, the thought of George Bush having sex with anyone or anything and groaning in pleasure is the stuff of nightmares to me.

The only importance this story would have would be in judging the people who support Bush. Most of Bush's base would probably never vote for a bisexual person and their intolerance would force that person to hide that part of their life and instead parade the wife, the offspring, the dog, the macho brush cutting idiocy, and cowboy strutting on the ranch in front of our TV screens. I don't give a rat's ass who Pastor Ted Haggard sleeps with. But if he is also bisexual, the only importance of that to me is the way it reflects upon the nature of uptight, conservative, corporate Mega Churches in America today, in that the leaders of those movements must lie to the public, condemn homosexuality, while leading a private and secret life.

Whether Bush is secretly bisexual or not is of no importance to me except to the extent that by the very fact it must remain highly and radioactively secret, it is a reflection on the intolerance of the people who support him.

If Bush's bisexuality were suddenly to be revealed to the world in no uncertain terms, it might be one of the few times I would actually feel bad for Bush. But while I might feel bad about his private life being intruded upon, I would at the same time be pointing the finger and laughing at the bigots who voted for Bush.

I am involved with my college's GLBT/Q support group and this is one of the biggest problems that we deal with--non GLBTers, even Allies, do not understand how these types of questions and comments are hurtful towards GLBTers.

This isn't about humor, because I am probably one of the most offensive people in the world--I joke about everything, including this topic, among friends. But the tone in some of the responses is not just "joking".
